We found a collie mix closer to home on CL (owner said she's gone 12 hours each day). We're going to see it tonight. Any idea what's mixed with it? My MIL has worked at a vet office for about 14 years and was stumped.

Re: Ideas on breed?
There really aren't history/vet records available through many of the shelters I've seen other than what the foster has taken care of. We were open to getting a puppy and I SAH so housebreaking isn't a huge deal to me (I've housebroken several dogs in the past). DH and I are going to go see her tonight to see what her temperament is like. We're told she's about 6m, we'll see what she's like when we see her. We're looking for a big, energetic dog. We've been very picky with breed and if it's not this on we're thinking I'll go to OH (from MO) to adopt a female Collie/Golden from a foster there (that's about 4-5 months). We're considering not taking the kids so we can make a more rational decision vs. "oh a puppy, I want to get a puppy". We're stuck on either a golden, collie, or lab or any mix between those 3.
I'm not trying to be argumentative, just thinking that if this dog isn't adopted/purchased from CL it'll end up at a shelter and we'd have the same or less information. Also, I'm sure 99% of shelters are great, but where we adopted our border collie/Australian shepherd from back in 2006 (my FIL stole her from us, they've always had a special bond and she's miserable when she's away from him) got shut down because of bad conditions. THIS is where we got our/FIL's dog from. I just found out they got shut down a couple of weeks ago when DH and I were at Petco, we got to talking to the rescue there and she told us.
That's too bad about your prior shelter experience - there are many great shelters and rescues out there that do amazing work. Ultimately, whether you are comfortable getting a dog via Craigslist is a personal decision, and it sounds like you've already decided to meet this pup. I just wouldn't be comfortable, especially if her current owner is asking for $ if you decide to take her. You're also right that she could just end up in a shelter if you don't take her, but at least then her adoption fee would go to support other homeless animals and there wouldn't be the worry about making it easier for people to ditch their pets on Craigslist. That's purely my $0.02.
They aren't legally allowed to sell animals on CL.
OP I would ask for medical records. If you give them advanced notice they should be able to get them from the vet before you look at the pup.
As far as breed she is 100% cute that's all I can say. She does like she could be a mix of the
breeds you mentioned but I can't say for sure.
No ideas on breed but she is a cutie!!! Good luck meeting her!
We found our cat on Craigs List. A woman was giving him away because she learned she was highly allergic. He was 6 months old. We had no issues and hes been wonderful.
According to what law?
Its Craigslist Policy, and they do a reasonable job of keeping up with it. They do allow a small adoption fee though. Obviously there is some wiggle room there, but in general selling is not acceptable on their site.
Quoted from their rules:

Doesn't make it illegal. Just against CL policy. And that's only if the person OP is meeting is indeed "selling" the dog, which isn't clearly defined in CL's policy.
Pardon my use inappropriate use of illegal. Its against their terms of use and surprisingly well controlled.
Cute! Looks like Bingo from that old 80s-90s flick
Collie is obvious. From the picture the pup looks very red, like a dark fawn color, which could be a Golden Retriever but would more likely be Irish Setter, Australian Shepherd, maybe even Boxer (also the mask makes me think Boxer).
It's fun to guess, but why is breed so important anyway? A dog is what you raise him to be.
