Getting ready to move

I am getting ready to move out with my fiance. I want to declutter both my room, and my fiance's room that way when we finally move you, we won't have tons of stuff that doesn't have a "home" in our new home. Does anyone have any organization tips they suggest? Anyone have a checklist of how to declutter a room or something of that matter?

Re: Getting ready to move

  • I would personally set up 3 boxes: 1 to donate, 1 to throw out, and 1 to keep.

Keep clothes, jewelry, and shoes that you have used within the last year. If you havent used it within that time frame, most likely you won't use it. Throw out any items that have damage to them.

Ask yourself how do you see this in your new house? Is it worth having a spot, or will it collect dust or be left in a box?

I would also suggest tackeling each room together, one at a time. This way you can discuss how will it beneficial to the new home. If it seems to daunting, take one section of your room at a time over the course of a few days.

We did this when DH first moved in with me (back when we were dating). In his situation he brought everything over in bags and boxes and we placed all his clothes in drawers, video games and personal keep items were put in their proper spot, and what was left over was put in the trash.

  • In the days and weeks leading up to a move my new night time hobby becomes decluttering section by section.  I LOVE it.  I go to goodwill with bags once or twice a month.  I like to take just one piece a night, say a file cabinet.  Play some music, and have my hubby and I go through each file and discuss what to throw and keep.  It feels so invigorating.  I don't have a schedule but I start in one corner of the house and move to each new "item" every night.  Like a closet, a cabinet, etc.  Have fun with it!
