Motrin Commercial Controversy

Anyone care to weigh in on the big Motrin ad controversy? (For a summary, see http://parenting.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/11/17/moms-and-motrin/).

I think it's tough to combine a "hip," snarky tone with an issue that's so personal, so I feel kind of bad for the copywriter who created the ad (and the drubbing he or she is surely receiving today). But I don't blame moms who disliked it either, because it does come off kinda insulting.

I've found their woman-oriented advertising to be kind of patronizing and cliche for a while. BUT I really love their product, so it hasn't changed my buying habits yet. How about y'all?

Re: Motrin Commercial Controversy

  • I kinda agree.  I saw that yesterday and I was thinking about it.  It doesn't change my buying habits either.  I don't really look into stuff that deep.  However, I can kinda understand how it can offend some.  I'm personally not offended ( I thought it was kinda funny) but it did have a snarky little tone to it.  I think that if the voice didn't sound so sarcastic so many people wouldn't have such a big issue with it.  But if you look at the message of the advertisment and not worry about the tone, it is telling the truth.  I know that my baby is only a week old and I don't really wear him much, but I have worn other babies before for short periods of time and that hurts.  I can only imagine wearning for long periods and often.

  • I'm not a mom, so you can take what I say with a grain of salt. I think they are being overly-sensitive about this. As a non-mom, I didn't think "Psssh yah - you're right - those moms just do that to look fashionable." I thought more along the lines of it's cute to carry your baby that way - and I've thought to myself that it must be hard on your back. Motrin could maybe help???

I also have not heard the commercial - I imagine a lot is implied in the tone.

  • I just read that, I haven't seen the commercial. I think the people complaining are overreacting as well. Is it still online to see?

On a non-motrin side note- I personally tried "wearing" my baby and it hurt my back and I don't think it was a good pain. lol : ) People have been doing this for years though, I know my Mom used to carry me around like that. I kind of wish I could cause I would be able to get more things done around the house!

    Diane- are you in advertising?

Motrin removed it from their Web site, but, of course it's on You Tube along with about a zillon spoofs and reaction videos. Here's the link to the original:

I actually work in public relations, but at UCF, advertising and public relations are a combined major so I've studied both. The Motrin thing is an interesting case study both in advertising and crisis PR. It's just amazing how much influence blogs and twitter and youtube have today.

I really like the idea of "baby wearing" (although I'd never heard it called that until the Motrin thing), but I had never thought about how much work it would be.

    Interesting story all around!
