In the spring of 2003, I broke the Iron Bowl trophy.
Yes, that was the last time the trophy traveled between Tuscaloosa and Auburn.
Tradition has it that the old trophy, which is sponsored by the honor society ODK, is transferred to the winning school after the Iron Bowl. The SGA president of the losing team then has to sing the fight song of the other team.
In 2003 I was a senior at UA and an officer in ODK. I rode down to Auburn in a friend's tiny convertible with the trophy in the backseat. When we got to the basketball complex, I got out of the car.. and the trophy was wedged in the car's ceiling. We eventually got the trophy out.. but the little kicker guy ended up in my hand, broken from the rest of the trophy.
This all was about an hour before the AU/UA basketball game was supposed to start. The big handoff took place during halftime. I basically was mortified and asked if they had a repairman at the coliseum that might have a hot glue gun.
I'm not sure how they fixed it, but it looked normal during the game when our SGA president had to sing Auburn's song. (on a side note, I was on the floor of the stadium during the halftime and I heard a voice behind me say "You sure are a tall girl...) I turn around and it was Tommy Tubberville. I asked him if I was blocking his view. He was pretty nice.
Re: In honor of the Iron bowl: a confession.
Yeah.. I'm really hoping that bama wins this year because I felt for a while that I might have jinxed it... haha.
Candi.. I'm 6'0.
I see... so it was all your fault!! LOL! Of course I'm kidding!
that's a great story!
haha..sarah, i was thinking the same thing!
that's great..love the tall girl comment too. i'm always worried about blocking ppl's view and tend to stay towards the back or slouch down in my seat at movies. hehe
OMG, I was at that basketball game!!!! and uh, Tubs has told me I'm tall (I'm 5'11") but I guess it's different when he's joking around w/me and he knows me. ha.
I bet I know who helped you - it was either a guy named Jeremy or Chuck. Unless it was a student (then I'm at a loss b/c they change every year). But Jeremy does Operations and Chuck has worked in media for the basketball team since I was in school (he graduated a few years b/f me).
I would love to tell yall the running joke about singing of the fight songs....... but I'm a good sport.
I LOVE this tradition w/ODK and the two schools. It's awesome.
Thanks for sharing Lydia!!!
