Poll: top load or front load washer/dryer?

So we close on our house next week and I want to take advantage of Black Friday to buy a washer and dryer set. Our laundry room is on the main floor near the front entry area, so I'm kind of leaning toward the top loaders since people will see them and they look nicer IMO.

However, in doing my research, even some of the top-end brands get some really low reviews from some very disatisfied customers. It seems like a hit-or-miss kind of thing, but I'm afraid we'll get stuck with the "miss," if you know what I mean. I don't want to spend $1200+ on something that's going to stink and I'm going to hate after 2 weeks!

So, what do you have--top load or front load? Are you happy with what you have? What brand? How long have you had them? Have you had problems any problems? Did you buy an extended warranty?

Thank you!

Re: Poll: top load or front load washer/dryer?

  •  what do you have--top load or front load? We have a TOp Load Washer

Are you happy with what you have? Yes I love my washer

What brand? GE Harmony Profile  It's this one

    http://www.geappliances.com/products/introductions/harmony/

How long have you had them? A year

Have you had problems any problems? No we haven't had one single prblem with it. It's a king size washer so we can still washer our comforter in it and it does a great job. It doesn't have the middle spindle thingy LOL

Did you buy an extended warranty? NO we didn't. We actually went in to Home Depot and the Dryer was clearanced to almost half the price with nothing wrong with it and then we drove to a store like 45 mins away to get the washer at half the price. They have the " The washer talks and the dryer listens" Feature so when the Washer is done it sets up the Dryer for what cycle it needs to dry the clothes at it's a really nice feature and the screens are touch screens. I absolutely love them.

  • We have a front load Kenmore HE something.  I love it.  If you plan on having more kids I think front loader is the way to go.  You also save on water and electricity.  If you want a top load my friend raves about her fisher paykel (sp?) She has 3 kids and she said she can do huge loads.

I have had mine for 3 years.  No problems and I never buy the extended warranty.  Usually the warranty ends up more expensive then a repair, your problems happen after the warranty is up, or your repair is not covered anyway in some fine print that you never noticed.

  • We bought the Frigidaire Afinity 7000 series frontloaders. I absolutely love them! We've had them just over a year, and have not had any problems with them what-so-ever.

We also bought the pedastels that came with them, just so they are higher off the ground, and it makes a difference. I don't remember if we bought the exteded warranty with them.

  • What do you have--top load or front load? Front loade

Are you happy with what you have? Yes, LOVE IT

    What brand? Frigidaire (something)

How long have you had them? A year and a half or so

Have you had problems any problems? The seal has a small leak that we have to get fixed (we just have a wash cloth in front of it now to catch the little leak it has.

Did you buy an extended warranty? No - we bought it through FIL.  He repairs equipment and this one had a crack through the front glasspane; he repaired it and we got a HUGE discount on it (I think we paid like $100-200 for it)  So FIL is our extended warranty. ;-)

  • We have a front loader, we are very happy with it. We have frigidaire washer and dryer. We've had them for 5 years. The only problem we had with them was when our movers moved them from our basement into our new house. The jostling (i.e. banging) of them up the steps broke a part in the door. The repair itself wasn't too bad, I think the cost of the reapirman was more, grand total was $175 I think. We bought the extended warranty but never needed it.
  • I assume you are going with HE washer and dryer? I had a toploading HE washer in my condo and I HATED it. The clothes would get tangled in knots. It was awful. If you're getting an oldschool washer with an agitator, its fine, but for HE, you definitely want a frontloader.

I have a maytag in my new house that I LOVE. The only thing I'm not a huge fan of is that the salesperson neglected to tell me that you can't switch which way the door swings on the washer (you can on the dryer), so the door is always in the way when I'm switching out my loads. Just ask about the way the doors swing on BOTH the washer and dryer. I know you can order them so they swing the "right" way for your setup.

  • We have the same GE Profile that the PP described.

Pros: Top load is much more convienent. It has the same technology as a front loader (no agitiator) but the door is on top.

The touch screen is really nice. I love being able to just push "baby stains" and it sets everthing accordingly.

Cons: Not sure if it cleans as nicely as my dad's LG front loader.

We got it VERY cheap at the Germantown Appliance World. The price was so good that we couldn't pass it up. They have that whole room of scratch and dent stuff and my washer had just a tiny scuff on the back.

    Good luck!
