***Irish & Other Catholics

I'm running off to church right now, so I won't be able to respond, but I'll be able to read your responses on my phone.

I'm going to a Catholic baptism today for my sorority sister's two daughters.  There are 2 trains, one gets into the train station an hour before the ceremony, one gets in 10 minutes before.  It's an 18 minute drive from the train station to the church.

I'm going to try to catch the earlier one, but I'm curious in case I miss it - how long are baptisms?  In my church, we do them during the service and they're maybe 10 minutes long, tops.  But this seems to be its own thing, since it's happening at 1:30 in the afternoon.  I would feel fine walking into a regular mass 10 minutes late, but not necessarily a solitary sacrament, kwim?

Thanks for any help!

Re: ***Irish & Other Catholics

  • Usually (at least in my eexperience) they are during mass. But I've been to a few that are after mass (including my god sons). It took about 15 minutes max, but we spent time chatting and taking pictures after the baptism.
  • Ditto Irish. ?Do you know if it's part of Mass or after? ?If it is part of the Mass it will probably be about an hour total. ?If it's after probably 10-15 minutes.
  • After mass-10-15 minutes with a little prayer service, which is usually part of one not during mass.  During mass, 1 hour, including mass.

  • Thanks, all!  I ended up catching the first train, so I was fine.  The whole thing ended up being a half and hour because there were two families and three babies.  It wouldn't have been the end of the world if I had been 10 minutes late, but it would have been awkward as the baptismal font was at the back of the sanctuary, by the doors.

Anyway, here's a pic from the dinner after with my friend and her older daughter (after changing out of her white dress, clearly):
