Moms of infants with wheat intolerance and/or allergy

I'm beginning to think Austin has an intolerance for wheat. We introduced him to some muslix and noticed a rash/eczema on his cheeks starting after a day or so. He has had this rash on and off and we never thought it was related to a food intolerance, since he gets eczema food allergies aside, from drooling etc. Anyways, we noticed the rash and I decided to stop the muslix right away to see if it went away and the rash decreased...I then gave him oatmeal one night for dinner and noted how restless he was all night long - so we stopped that too and the rash on his cheeks seems SO much better today since we stopped the wheat products...experiences? how did you notice it in your child? etc? etc?

I know a lot of intolerances children outgrow...but I just was wondering what some of you moms went through TIA!

Re: Moms of infants with wheat intolerance and/or allergy

  • Lisa -

I do not know anything about this, but maybe you could try the Toddler board on the Bump and see if any moms over there have experience with this?

  • Wouldn't you have noticed it sooner? Would wheat products you eat pass into breatmilk? I know that dairy intolerances/allergies can be found that way, not sure about wheat, though.

I'm sorry your little guy is uncomfortable.

  • when Autumn was a week old she started having blood in her stools and we had to go back to childrens in boston and they said it was a milk protien allergy so i had to stop breastfeeding and she went on a precribtion formula

the reason i stopped breastfeeding was because milk protien is in sooo much i would have to have been so carefull ready all ingredients its in things like whey and i believe wheat was a no no also the list was 2 pages long so im pretty sure anything you eat passes into breastmilk i woould just call the pedi and have them check it out

  • Right now we are just watching the eczema....yeah I though we would have noticed it earlier on too, so it may just be nothing - I'm just super paranoid about allergies - but his stools are fine...the rash on his cheeks is still there, but diminished thanks to petroleum jelly and it's been quite a few days since we have given him a product with wheat it in, so it may just be his teething/drool....we are going to wait a bit and then try the oatmeal/muslix again and see if it flares up worse or not....thanks ladies
  • Hi Lisa,

Owen had a wheat/gluten intoleranc of some sort from the time we introduced it (around 7 months) until a year old.  We would try it, he would react & we would take 2 weeks off.  Try it again, react again, take 3 weeks off.  Try again, react, 4 weeks off.  We did this until just b/f his birthday when he tried it w/o reacting!

When he ate wheat he would get a very bumpy rash all over his trunk.  He also had increased reflux, spitting up, nasty diapers, gas & general fusiness.  He was tested twice for Celiac's & was negative both times, so we were comfortable doing trial & error.  Wheat/gluten can be difficult for their little digestive systems to digest.

He does get eczema on his checks from very small amounts of milk & soy (which he is still allergic to).  If that was his only symptom, I probably wouldn't avoid them but b/c he has lots of other symptoms we avoid.

He gets eczema (on his checks & other places) from other things to, but there is a difference & DH & I can tell when it is from an allergen & when it is not.

Try not to be too paranoid about food allergies (especially since he doesn't have any yet), there isn't anything you can do about them.
