Wisconsin Name Change

Sorry to ask, but I don't know why there isn't an easy comprehensive online explanation of how this works! I never changed my name after my wedding in August '07 but am now planning (probably) to change it pre-baby (due in Jan). How does this work?

1. Online it says I have to go to Social Security first and change my name there.

2. Can I go to the DMV right away the same day to change my info there as well, or do I have to wait until changes go through and I get a new SS card?

3. What else did you change right away? Did you notify your bank? Credit cards? Medical insurance? Other?

Thank you.

Re: Wisconsin Name Change

  • Change it at the SS office first.

You have to wait until you get your SS card in the mail (I think mine took a week or two) before you can go to the DMV and change your license.

After you get your new license, contact anything else that has your name on it... bank, credit cards, insurances, frequent flier miles, alumni clubs, etc.  I think I needed to have a copy of my marriage certificate for most of those when I changed them..... so I'm not sure how you'd do it if you not changing due to marriage.

  • Ditto pp, you have to go to the SS office/send the application in before you can go to the DMV.

  • I went to the DMV right after the SS office.  I took my paperwork from SS office with me.  Took a few minutes at both.

  • wait till you have your new DL to change your bank stuff, CC's and insurance.  Most of those need id to use them.

  • When I changed mine in April I went to the SS office first and then I took all of that Paperwork with me and changed it at the DMV right away But in order to change everything else you do have to have your id before you do everything. I started with our house stuff since we own and then I did the bank and I still don't think my CC are all changed over

  • Good, thanks! I'm really hoping to both SS & DMV in the same day.

  • My SS office gave me a piece of paper that acted as my SS card with my married name until the new one arrived...I took that to the DMV & they were ok with it.  I did both SS & DMV within a few days of each other.

I also made several copies of our marriage license so that I could send it if anyone needed to see it - but I waited to notify everyone else until I had my SS & license changed.  If I remember correctly, our bank needed to see a copy, as did my school & all of our credit cards.

  • I went to the SSA first and then the DMV in the same day.

The SSA gave me a form to take to the DMV, but the DMV didn't even ask for it, the lady just looked at the certified copy of the marriage license.

As soon as I got a certified copy of my marriage license I was able to change everything at work (since the SS # didn't change, they didn't need a new copy)

Once I had my new licence, I could change everything else.  I did not need my SS card to change anything.  It has sat in my safe ever since it came in the mail.
