name change

Hi there, I don't usually post on this board but I thought it might be worth a try for this question.  I got married almost 2 years ago and on the marriage certificate I didn't change my name so the lisence has my old name.  Now I want to change it.  Has anyone done this?  Do I have to pay $320 for a court order to change my name because I didn't legally change on the marriage certificate?  It probably doesn't help that we got married in another state!  Any advice will help.  Thanks!

Re: name change

  • Unless you are male, you do NOT need a court order to get your name changed due to marriage.  Nor do you need to have your name changed on your marriage license...your marriage license is supposed to have your "old" name on it.

You will need an official copy of your marriage license in order to get your name changed with Social Security.  Once you do that, you can start changing it on everything else.
