NBR: What are you afraid of?

There was a teeny tiny little spider on my desk this morning and I had to have co-worker go and remove it for me. Spiders scare the crap out of me. I can deal with snakes and rodents. But never spiders. I'm also terrified of open heights. I also have noticed that as I get older, my fears are becoming worse.

What scares you? You are all way younger than I am for the most part, but have any of you noticed your fears or phobias becoming more intense as you age?

  • I'm terrified of the dark. My heart starts to race and my first instinct is to close my eyes.

    It's slippery as waterweed.
  • This is more of a confession than anything but I am afraid of things under the bed.  I can't watch scary movies because of it.  I had to watch IT during the daylight hours in hopes that Penny Wise would be under someone elses bed by dark.

I'm afraid of falling. I can't even stand on a chair without getting dizzy anymore. I think the older you get, the more you realize that things actually can hurt you, that you're not invincible, and it becomes more real.

  • I'm terrified of the dark, outside - but only if I'm out there alone. I start imagining all sorts of stuff and my heart races and then I have to run inside.

I am also scared of water that I cannot stand up in.

I haven't really noticed my fears getting worse the older I get.

  • Not being in control of my situation.  If I go somewhere, especially overnight, I want to drive myself in my own car, so I know I am in control of whether I stay or leave.  I feel this way no matter how well I know the people I'm travelling with or spending time with.  I even feel that way at work.  It would cause an insane amount of stress to be dropped off at work and be there all day without a car.

  • Spiders scare the shit out of me, followed closely by snakes, followed closely by frogs. Roaches scare me, and so do most creepy crawly things in general.

I am not a big fan of elevators, either.

  • Spiders creep me out too... but little ones I can kill on my own, granted they don't move. The second they start walking/running away, I lose it. Same goes for any creepy-crawley.

    Now for the irrational fears:

Volcanoes.  Dante's Peak scarred me for life when I was a kid. I attempted to watch "Volcano" in HS... walked in on my mom and grandma in the middle of the movie... I lasted all of 2 minutes before I started having a panic attack and had to hide my bedroom until they were done.

Lobsters also creep me out. They're just giant underwater insects.

I also can't do weird/repeating textures. Think the inside of a beehive... It's the equivalent of nails on a chalkboard and I freak out if I have to look at it.
  • I'm terrified of drowning.  I also am very scared of steps that you can see through like these: image

I feel like the older I get, the more ridiculous my fears are becoming.

i HATE steps you can see through.  I feel dizzy walking on them.  I was at H&M a few weeks ago, and they have CLEAR steps.  They are slightly clouded so people can't look up women's skirts or whatever, but you can still make out shapes below. I hate it.
  • My fears are more along the never being missed or remembered or never leaving an impact kind of fears.

As a kid I hated water that I could not stand up in. After many tears, lessons, and even being on swim team. I can handle that fear for the most part, though I have never had to use my skills in the middle of the ocean, even though I know what to do.

  • Snakes. If I ever see a snake in our yard, we are going to have to move. Immediately.

And to copy off of what someone else said, stairs that you can see through. The gym has stairs like these and they make me so anxious.

I have issues with this too. It gives me the willies. Tree bark, those seed pods with the holes in them, scales...it's such a weird thing to be bothered by, but ick!

  • Snakes.  Completely irrational fear.  My family has kept pet snakes.  It's just something about the way they move*.  Creeps me the fuck out!

I'm also afraid of drowning by being trapped in a space underwater where I can't surface.  Under the ice, in a car, etc.  Oddly, I'm still interested in cave diving. Go figure.

Robots with snake movements make me shudder just as much.

yuck.  my BF used to have a memory foam mattress topper... i freaked out so much trying to sleep on it that he finally got rid of it =X

I DO like memory foam pillows though... i just have to get the ones that don't hold shape AT ALL when you move. (I guess that isn't memory foam though... lol so I just like foam pillows??) and I flip it over so i sleep on the flat side, not the curved side. So comfy.
  • open heights--though I've been skydiving.  IDK how I did that one...
