I had one with both of my children. With my DD I actually was managing the pain quite well and did not get the epi until I was about to transition, but was scared because it was night that the anesthesiologist would go to dinner or home for the night and I'm scared to death of the transitional phase. lol My birth was awesome.

I also had one with DS. I was in pain for days and when I was finally admitted I was in the hospital for 5 hours before the anesthesiologist finally came in to administer my epi. She had a hard time placing it because my discs are close together but I didn't care, I was so tired and DS was pushing on my rectal area and it hurt terribly, I still wanted it.. This epi did not work so well. It barely took the edge off. I still felt all the pressure and pain and was trying to pull myself up to get the pressure off my rectum.

All that said, I'll still get one the third time.

  • I did not get one, and honestly, I thought I was going to die.  However, for the next kid, I probably won't get one either.  If I made it through that, I can do it again.  I'm hoping the next one is positioned better so I won't be in so much pain.

  • I likely will have a c-section, but if not I'll start the epidural right now, thank you!

  • I'm planning to get one, but I'm also planning to learn about lots of breathing and relaxation techniques, in the event it doesn't work. I've heard lots of those stories!

If it's bad enough I will. I'm only opposed to narcotics and major pain meds after birth.

I'm allergic to NSAIDs so I'm pretty much terrified of pain killers. For everyday pain I can only take acetaminophen (Tylenol).

  • I plan to.

From my BFP I always said I wanted an epi (I mean I told my Dr that I def wanted the epi) then thinking about it I told them I want to have the option if I wanted it. But I'm such a little cry baby that I am almost certain that I'll get it.
  • Yep ladies! I agree both ways. I managed the second time even though the epi wasn't working so well. but I'd still get it again even though I survived that pain. I'm just too terrified of the last phase, well and the actually exit.

although it is definitely true what they say. When they come out, the relief you feel is amazing like you didn't just spend 30+ hours in labor..

  • I did not have an epi with either of my deliveries as that was my plan all along, but even if I had wanted one I'm not sure there would have been time. The first time I was only at the hospital 4 hrs before DD was born (progressed from 4 cm to 10 cm in an hr and a half) and DS was born only 2 hours after getting to the hospital (again progressed very quickly). So my advice to everyone now is even if you plan on having an epi learn some techniques to deal without it just in case you don't have time to get one, it doesn't take, etc....

My cousin didn't even know she was in labor with her DD and from the time she got to the hospital, checked in and was rushed down the hall she was only there 8 minutes and one push and her DD was born. That sounds like heaven!

me too. Then they gave me an IM shot of morphine in my leg for pain control after it wore off, and I didn't even feel it bc the spinal was still working. Fantastic!

For our next, if I decide to do a VBAC, I will still opt for the epi.

  • I asked for an epi the minute I was checked into the hospital when I was 4cm dialated. 2 hours later, when I was 9 cm, I finally got my epidural. I am pretty sure I could have done without one, bc there was only a half hour from getting the epi to pushing, and I could feel a lot of the pushing. But the only thing I had in my birth plan was to get an epi.

I do not plan on getting one. If I need pain meds I will try other things before getting the epi.
Be sure to do your research on your options for other pain meds.  I hear a lot of them can make you feel very out of it.   I hope that didn't sound snarky - I don't really know how else to say it, lol

it is true. one thing that was *really* important to me was to be alert when DS was born. I wanted to be 100% there so I could remember it. I also wanted to be able to BF right away.

I was given some kind of IV pain med (I should probably know what but I was to busy sobbing uncontrollably) because I refused an epi, I didnt reduce any pain at all, it just made me dizzy and want to pass out. So def look into alternate pain meds to know the side effects.

    No, not snarky at all!

Oh yea. They have me some kind of IV drug, bc it was taking an absurdly long time for me to get my epidural. I have no idea what it was and it made me loopy for a bit. I just remember when the dr asked me if I knew what I was getting before administering the epi,I had to focus really hard on saying "epidural shot." If I wasn't coherent enough to say epidural I wouldn't have been able to get one. I was given a really low dose-just enough to take off the edge until I got the epi. But I was way more loopy with that than the epi, which didnt change my mental capacity or ability to know when to push at all.

  • I'd much rather have the epidural than IV pain meds that make you loopy. I had an epidural that was great. The pain meds after my c section, however, made me fall asleep for the first two hours of my son's life. That kind of sucked.

  • @madeline10L definitely research your pain relief options. Like many others said a lot of the IV drugs make you loopy but you are still in pain.

I got an epidural. My plan from BFP was to go until I felt I needed one. Well, I was in pre term labor for 6 weeks, had SPD and they were giving me a dose of pitocin. I sent out for my epidural when they came in with the pitocin. Those contractions were awful and on top of each other so no break. They gave me the epi at like 1030pm I think and I didn't have her until 3pm the next day. I don't think I could have dealt with 15 hours of those pitocin contractions and then had the energy to push. Honestly I had contractions for 6 weeks and she was 0 station that whole time ago I feel like I got to feel what labor was likeeven if it was in a non traditional way. Also, it was the first time I had slept for real in over 6 weeks.

This is odd to me. I was not out of it at all with either of my epi's? I never heard of that as a side effect either because it basically is intended to numb you from a certain point down. The weird side effect I did have was my left leg was inoperable the second time for a few hours.

I did however have them give me something in my IV to take the edge off the second time and all it did was make me feel like I'd just taken a crap load of drugs. Hated that feeling.
