i may be alone in this boat....

...but are there any popular books or series you've NOT read just because they're "in" right now?

I frequently get annoyed with trendy series and can't bring myself to even crack a page.  I compare it to the hype a lot of blockbuster movies get: You go in expecting it to be so great and it ends up disappointing you because of your expectations.  I don't read movie reviews for this reason... but I find it incredibly hard not to take book suggestions to heart. When it's something that everyone is reading, I can't get away from the 'OMG ITS SOOOO GOOD' feedback, and I just can't bring myself to give it a "fair" shot.

  • I do it with movies moreso than books.

  • I was like that with Twilight. I'm much more likely to be like that with movies than with books. Usually by the time it's a really popular book (to the general public) it's old news to me.

  • Nope.

I think most books/series are popular for a reason - they're awesome.  High expectations alone rarely, if ever, ruin a book for me.

  • Sometimes I wait for the hype to die down, but if I want to read something I will do it regardless of how popular/unpopular it is.

  • Not me. I usually tend to like the really popular ones.  I read Harry Potter late, but its because I tried to read it once several years before and really just couldn't get into it. I'm not sure if it was just the mood or what because several years later I read it all and loved it.

I read Twilight series and Hunger Games series right as they were getting popular, but that's not why I've read them.

I haven't read 50 SOG, but that's less because its popular and more because I just don't think it is something I would enjoy.

I write sexy books. I read all the books. I love dresses & macarons.

  • Until this board, I pretty much lived under a rock. I only knew about Twilight in 2008 because my X-SIL sent them to me when I was away at school.  The Hunger Games books were gifted to me on my kindle when I was on deployment in 2011.

  • The only one that I've done this with is 50SoG.  If someone physically threw one in my face, I might read it, but I'm not going out of my way for it.

All the others? I've absolutely tried them out.  Usually I agree with the masses.

I even read 50SoG because I wanted to know what the fuss was about. I can now make informed (pissy) opinions about this book.

I don't really let popularity sway me in either direction. I have loved and hated popular books, but on my own accord, not based on their hype.

I like to read what everyone is reading because I hate missing out on the epic convos that everyone has.

  • I hope nobody jumps down my throat BUT I wish I had waited just a little bit before reading TFIOS.  That isn't to say I didn't like the book... I did really like it!!!  It's just that with everybody going nuts over it & my reading it right after everybody was going nuts, it was almost impossible for it to live up to it's hype.  Had I waited a bit, I probably would have had the same reaction as everybody else.

Let me reiterate - I really liked TFIOS!  :)  Don't revoke my NBC card!

  • I like to think that NBC keeps me ahead of these things  :-B
Sometimes if there's a lot of hype I'll wait until it dies down before I read something.  I'm too easily influenced and prefer to go into things with a completely open mind.

  • Meh. I don't really care either way. If it doesn't sound like something I will like AT ALL, no amount of hype will get me interested. (Like GoT, for example) Sometimes if it does sound like something I'll like, the hype will prompt me to give it a try. Sometimes I'm disappointed, sometimes I'm glad I gave it a try.

I will probably never read GoT or NoTW despite how hyped they are here and elsewhere. Not my cup of tea at all.

  • I figure if it's popular it's probably for a good reason.  Just because it's popular doesn't make it bad and if I wait shit will get spoiled for me.

  • I don't NOT read them, but sometimes I do think I'd like some things more if the expectations hand't been artificially lifted. Sometimes I go into a popular book with the assumption that I'm not going to like it, just so that I don't have expectations and can enjoy it more. Still read them though.

this is actually pretty brilliant. if you hate it, you can basically prove yourself right and that's a win in my book... if you love it, then that's also a win.
  • I tend to go more by what interests me.  I read Hunger Games at the height of their popularity and enjoyed them.  I've never read 50 Shades of Grey and likely never will because it doesn't interest me.

I almost always like them okay. But if I was expecting to love it, I would have been disappointed.

That's actually the book that made me think about it.. I tried to read them and just couldn't. I'll probably be e-stoned for saying it, but I felt like the little bit I did read was very poorly written.

It isn't a terribly common occurrence with me to hate popular series, BUT there have been a lot of other series that I've never read because of the hype/not being interested. I think the only popular series I've actually read was Hunger Games and that was because I read it a year or two before it became a thing.
