The only one that I've done this with is 50SoG.  If someone physically threw one in my face, I might read it, but I'm not going out of my way for it.

All the others? I've absolutely tried them out.  Usually I agree with the masses.
That's actually the book that made me think about it.. I tried to read them and just couldn't. I'll probably be e-stoned for saying it, but I felt like the little bit I did read was very poorly written.
I am at a complete loss for how to respond to this.

not my friend directly, but yes.

i will say I've dumped a few friends in the past few months. the ones left are pretty great, with the exception of book tastes. Most of my actual friends don't read often, or they start a book and never finish.  I end up discussing books with people at work mostly, who are all 50SoG obsessed. Or were. It's not so 'hot' anymore.

It isn't a terribly common occurrence with me to hate popular series, BUT there have been a lot of other series that I've never read because of the hype/not being interested. I think the only popular series I've actually read was Hunger Games and that was because I read it a year or two before it became a thing.
You really need to hang out here more.

  • I mean, if something is getting a lot of hype I always run out and buy it at B&N or at the used bookstore.

But I don't always read it right away. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.

I am currently reading Hunger Games. It's not something I typically choose for myself and I wanted the hype to die down for that reason.

  • If it sounds like something I would like, I will read it whether popular or not.
  • The girls around these parts keep me so informed, I know about and have read most amazing books before they ever become popular.
    image
  • I'm sure there are people who haven't read 50SoG simply because it's trendy to hate it.
My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

  • I usually read books because the good reviews they get from publishers, authors, etc. Not specifically because they're popular.
That hasn't always worked out in my favor, though (I.E. Dollar Store paperbacks).

  • Nope.  I don't tend to follow trends a lot.  I mean I know what is trendy, but it doesn't change my opinion about the subject. If I am interested I am interested, if I am not I am not.

That goes for books, clothing, movies, music etc

I don't NOT read them, but sometimes I do think I'd like some things more if the expectations hand't been artificially lifted. Sometimes I go into a popular book with the assumption that I'm not going to like it, just so that I don't have expectations and can enjoy it more. Still read them though.

I mostly do this. This is why I read twilight. I wanted to see what the fuss was about and ended up turning into a crazy obsessed teenager.

  • Most of the really popular books that I've read have been read long after the hype has died down. I don't necessarily do it on purpose. I just seem to take forever to get around to the really good books. I won't avoid books simply because they are really popular, though. If they sound like something I'll enjoy, I'll read them.
