It's been a while. Who's actually *read* 50 Shades of Grey?
(Just the first one; not the whole series.)

ETA - Since I can't edit the poll, "I read it as fanfic but not as 50SoG" = "No."

Re: Fess up/Show of hands: Part II

  • I have not, but I have a morbid curiosity to.

I shouldn't be embarrassed but I don't want to buy it and I'm too chicken shit to get it from the library.

  • @SnShne322 If you're curious, just google "Master of the Universe" Twilight fanfiction. It'll be close enough.

  • I read it as the fanfic so I don't think I fall into any of these categories.

  • I tried when it first came out. It's helpful when the vapids are like, "OMG SQUEEEEEE. You must read this fabulous book!" I can say, "I tried. It's trash. No thanks."

  • I did. I don't get it. ::Hides:: I felt the same way about Twilight.

My sister bought them for me and shipped them from Michigan to Virginia. I will ship them to you if you want!

  • I read it to see what all the hype was about.  I can blow through a regular size book in two days if I'm really into it but it took me FIVE weeks to get through it.  I had to keep putting it down because it was that bad!

  • I did. It was poorly written crap, in my opinion.
  • I read it as fanfic, too.

If you'll part with them, I will take them!  I think at this point, I need to know what all the fuss is about and decide for good if they are crap with an informed opinion.

Perfect! @WillyH19 Thanks for the offer, but I think this saves us some shipping hassle!

@SusieBW I'm not sure if you have my email so I will PM it to you.

  • So, wait...when this was first written as fanfic, it was with Bella and Edward as the characters? I didn't know that.

I read the entire series when my coworkers were reading it, which is the same thing that happened when Twilight was big with them. I skipped most of the red room stuff though because I was going through the early days of my divorce, and I had NO INTEREST in reading about sex.

  • I could be remembering wrong but wasn't there a benwa (spelling) ball and spanking scene? How will that translate to a movie?

  • I did read them. My sister begged me to because she loved them so much, and I was super curious. I told her she had to read 3 books for me in exchange. I chose The Fault in Our Starts, The Messenger, and The Book Thief. It was mean, but I wanted her to suffer (by bawling her eyes out), like I had to suffer.

I have the lendable ebook/kindle version if you have an e-reader and want to read the published books, though there isn't much of a change between the 2.

  • Nope, do not plan on it either. I read the back and that was enough to let me know I would not enjoy it.
    ~E~
  • I read all of two pages of it and quit.
  • I read them, because I'm basically incapable of starting a book and not finishing. It was quick, we were on vacation and I was definitely not impressed. I read the other two hoping that there would be something redeeming in them, but there wasn't.

Well, in my defense, I steer mostly clear of FF (except for how I used to read SVU FF, as I discussed in the other thread), and I never saw the FF version of it until I searched for it on Google just now. But maybe I should have just kept that thought inside my head.

  • And I meant the character names. I kind of thought she renamed the characters when she wrote it as FF. Some of the stuff I have read had characters obviously based on fictional characters but with different names.

  • Okay, me again. The more I thought about this, the more I realized that that was a stupid question, and I should have thought that out more before I typed that out.

And I am going to stay out of this thread now.

Lol, no need. It was a valid question and it's shocking to me that more people don't know this since it was such a crazy-popular book. You are most definitely not the only one.

Exactly what Jacki said.  I was not headdesking because it was a stupid question, but because this is not a more widely-known fact.  I want to shout it from the rooftops and make sure every single person in the world knows WHY this fucking "book" got popular.

  • I will admit I read all 3 books. The first book made me irrationally angry in how BDSM is portrayed. I read the second and third books just for the outlandish plot twists.

To be honest, I have found better free erotica on Amazon than these books.

  • I read it as fic and as a published book. I was so thrilled for the author that she was going to turn it into a "real story"...then I read the published version and was so pissed off I couldn't even take it.
