NBR Poll: Celebrity Deaths

So in the memoir I'm listening to, the author talks about being devastated by the assassination of John Lennon.  And I realized I have just never been torn up over a celebrity death.  It's sad, of course, especially if they were young, but I've never cried or felt a sense of real loss.  Have you?  For what celebrity?  And how torn up were you?

Re: NBR Poll: Celebrity Deaths

  • No, I haven't. Sad, a little, but I've never cried of had it interrupt my day.  I feel sort of callous saying that, but it's true.

It's not callous. We don't know these people personally. I was pretty young when it happened, but I was really upset when River Phoenix died. Any time I see him in a movie, I get sad all over again. He was super talented. Same with Heath Ledger.
I write sexy books. I read all the books. I love dresses & macarons.

Not callous - or if it is then I'm callous too.  This is why I asked - I have never had that strong emotional reaction to the death of a person I don't know.

  • Ditto on the Heath Ledger thing. I thought it was way sad, but I went on with my life as per normal.

I've never felt any sort of connection to a celebrity/important person, so it doesn't bother me at all when they're gone.
  • Same as others. I've been sad. But never devastated. I don't think I could ever be horribly torn up over an actor or actress. Again, sad maybe, but not cry.

There are singers, however, that I feel like I could be devastated by if they passed.  I think its different for me because, though you may not know them personally, their music can become so much a part of you. Certain songs may be what you associate with joy or tragedy in our own lives, so I feel much more attached to certain singers than any actors, etc. If that makes any sense.

When Michael Jackson died. I know he was crazy and all but his music was such a big part of my childhood.

  • Nope.
If it was someone that I felt was making a difference in the world (aka John Kennedy/MLK/Robert Kennedy), but I don't feel like we have many of those in our generation.

  • Michael Jackson's death was really emotional for me, because I associate him and his music with so many things, like my childhood.

I think I cried when River Phoenix died because it was the first time a celebrity death was real to me. I was maybe 12 or 13 at the time.

I was really messed up over Heath Ledger's death because he was my age, his talent was immense, and I thought about the tiny little girl he was leaving behind. It all just seemed so senseless and tragic.

I'm an emotional person and death is sad no matter who's death it is. Even if I don't cry over every famous person's death, I always feel a sense of sadness when someone who's art I enjoyed/appreciated dies. Earlier this week a local car salesman died and his commercials have been playing since I was a little girl. I had a bit of a sniffle over that as well. *shrug*

  • I cry when something tragic happens to a celebrity, like overdoses. To me, I just keep thinking about how it could have been avoiding, why didn't they get the help they needed, how it's a life wasted, how it's talented wasted, how everyone saw these people self-destructing and nobody could stop them.

  • Jerry Garcia.  I totally cried.  I can think of a bunch of other musicians that I'll probably cry over, too.  But no one recently.  Sad or shocked, sure, but no tears.
  • I shed a tear for Heath. Like pp he's my age and left behind a kiddo. It didn't send me to therapy or make me miss work.

I'm with @julie37619.  I can't remember the last time, if ever, I got emotional over a celebrity death.

That said, I definitely got emotional over 9/11 and Sandy Hook. I didn't know any of the families affected either, and those events are senseless and tragic too, but those events hit home far closer than say, Heath Ledger's death.

I definitely was affected by Princess Diana's death. I don't think I cried because I was just so overwhelmingly sad. It was at a really sad point in my own life too so I became incredibly emo for quite a bit after her funeral.

Oh my you and I too. My sister texted me from Fresno to talk about it because no one there understood. It was a sad moment. I hope his "dog Spot" was there for him.

  • I was stunned by Cory Monteith's death. Such a waist of young talent.

I was affected by Jim Henson's death. The Muppets still remain one of my favorite shows of all time and it was one of the reasons I wanted to be a director. I miss everything he could be doing with his talent.

    I don't cry a lot though.

    I don't cry a lot though.

I think this a lot about young celebrity deaths, particularly suicides and deaths that are related to drugs, alcohol, and other things that are really just poor life choices. It is just really sad to see life just thrown away and wonder a) why they couldn't get help, or b)particularly in suicides, how it got that far without anyone noticing a problem.

I was actually thinking about this yesterday, as I watched a Dr. Phil special on the Bachelor's Gia, who died of suicide a couple of weeks ago. It's just sad that someone so young and beautiful and talented could be so hopeless that they throw it all away.

And it makes you think about how fortunate you are to not be in whatever place they're in.

  • I honestly had a hard time with Heath Ledger and quite frankly, Cory Montieth.  I think the reason is that they were so young and no one knew they were struggling.  I mean, I think of their families and how just out of the blue they are gone, it breaks my heart.
