I WANT to be excited about this. And I was, until they started announcing casting. It's not that I hate anyone they've casted, it's just that it's made me realize there is no way, no matter HOW good this is, that it will meet my expectations.
For most books, even my all-time favorites (ahem, HP), I'm perfectly fine with that, no matter how much I might bitch about the movie/tv/whatever. But not Outlander. Jamie is the PERFECT MAN in my head. Like, perfect. The whole story is perfect. And I don't want anything to influence my whole little Outlander world in my head.
AND: how are they going to make these actors 20 years older? Or will we just never get that far (they stretch the first two books over multiple seasons), which depresses me even more?
Re: So here is my THING with the Outlander miniseries (SP through VOYAGER)
As far as the aging goes, I'm not terribly concerned. The Tudors is a good example of how this can be done. Here's Jonathan Rhys Meyers at the beginning of the series:

This. Like I totally get what you're saying Lauren (and others) but I think in a way the fact that I love the books so much is helping me realize that there's no way they can make this series look exactly like how I picture it in my head so instead I'm just excited to see how they picture everything. There's been enough discussion here over the years for me to realize that we all picture differences in the characters/settings/etc- even with a fantastic written description. If we were all talented artists and could draw our version of Jamie I imagine there would be at least small differences between them. And that's basically what this is I think.
So I'm trying to just remember that this is a show and like Eli said it's just people telling one of my favorite stories.
And I'm not worried about aging the characters - the makeup techniques are so good anymore that I think it'll be totally fine.

I'm guilty of this too! Actually I just reread Voyager and at one point it dawned on me that I should be imagining them older and I'm totally not, whoops.

Ok, that makes sense. I was thinking it was meant to be a strong family resemblance, but not, like... twins.
I'm excited and nervous about it.
I feel the same way. I cherish the Outlander version in my head. I don't want anyone screwing with it. I have seriously debated not watching it. I hate when this happens because when I do rereads, it makes it harder for me to keep that original picture of the story in my head. Instead it starts to get replaced with the actors, not how I imagined them to start with.
I hope this makes sense. I feel like I am rambling.
