I never really thought about death until Princess Diana died. That was the saddest funeral EVER.

    That, and my sister's.
@84Lauren I didn't know your sister died. I'm so sorry.
OMG that's a Kelly quote from The Office!!!  My sister didn't die.  OMG.
@84Lauren OMG that whizzed right past me. (I'm so embarrassed.)
Don't be embarrassed.  Now I feel like kind of an asshole, lol!
@84Lauren It's not you, it's me. Internet sarcasm has been whizzing by me all day today.
This entire conversation just cracked my shizz up!
I definitely was affected by Princess Diana's death. I don't think I cried because I was just so overwhelmingly sad. It was at a really sad point in my own life too so I became incredibly emo for quite a bit after her funeral.
Completely unrelated, but I really like the new visual of the long quote.  It looks like a tunnel.
Right? It's mesmerizing. I want to just keep quoting and see how many shades of gray they can come up with.

I HATE (like, hate) that it is now impossible to refer to "shades of gray" without that book being the first thing everyone thinks of.  Gross.

Same here.  This is the only time I remember being really affected by a celebrity's death.

I was really sad when Dan Wheldon (Indycar driver) died. But a lot of that was because he was a younger guy leaving behind a young wife and two very young kids and he died in a very sudden and violent way which I watched happen on live tv (car crash in Las Vegas). And a big part of that was watching the reactions of others (like the other drivers and the reporters) because they were still on air after they announced it. I'm one of those people who cries if I see someone else cry so that didn't help.

I was sad when LeRoi Moore from Dave Matthews Band died (but not crying sad) and I remember being sad when Diana died but I was like 12 or something and adored her.

Otherwise no, they don't really impact me much.

eta b/c I keep thinking - I think with Diana part of what impacted me the most was thinking about William and Harry because they were so close to my age and they looked so sad and I just felt horrible for them.

And I think with Dan a big part of why it hit me so hard is because the Indycar community is relatively small and there's so much interaction between the drivers and fans (either at races, events, online, etc) that you really start to feel like you *know* them - so it makes it more real.

  • I honestly had a hard time with Heath Ledger and quite frankly, Cory Montieth.  I think the reason is that they were so young and no one knew they were struggling.  I mean, I think of their families and how just out of the blue they are gone, it breaks my heart.
For the most part I don't feel too affected by celebrity deaths but these two and Gia (from the Bachelor) really got to me.

Yeah, definitely.  I just don't understand when people that young "throw" their life away and then you really start to think about the toll that being in the spotlight has on you, especially if you already have issues.  It just makes me sad.

  • Princess Diana's death, I cried when O saw the card with Mummy written on it on her coffin. Johnny Cash got to me as well.

I cry when something tragic happens to a celebrity, like overdoses. To me, I just keep thinking about how it could have been avoiding, why didn't they get the help they needed, how it's a life wasted, how it's talented wasted, how everyone saw these people self-destructing and nobody could stop them.

    This is me, as well.

I cried quite a bit when Princess Diana died. I cried when Michael Jackson died because, crazy as he was, his music was a part of my childhood.

Im a pretty emotional person in general- the first time i hit a squirrel, i pulled over and sobbed for a half hour. So death- even the death of someone I don't know- is a very hard thing. Especially if it was a suicide or overdose , I can't wrap my head around the senselessness of it.
  • Heath Ledger.  I wasn't balling or anything but I really liked him.

  • Much like Chandler Bing, I am pretty much dead inside, so I don't usually cry over celebrity deaths. However, there have been some that affected me more than others.

One was Rebecca Schaeffer, who was in My Sister Sam with Pam Dawber. She answered her doorbell one day and was shot by a stalker fan. I don't remember being super sad about it, per se, but I definitely followed the news coverage of it.

Cory Monteith upset me because it was such a waste. I used to be a little judge-y about drug stuff, but after struggling with some things myself over the past couple of years, I really have come to see that addiction is not about just saying no and having willpower, and it makes me sad that he was struggling that much and that he was not able to outrun his demons.

I also was really sad just recently when Lee Thompson Young committed suicide. Again, it is just so sad that he was that lost and that no one really seemed to see it.

Lee Thompson Young's death bummed me out so bad because I really liked him and it was just so sad that nobody saw it coming and that he was obviously struggling with something that he kept pretty close to him.

I think Aaliyah's death was super sad. She was so young and just hearing about how happy she was and how everything seemed to be going her way and then she dies in a plane crash. I liked a few of her songs but the circumstance did make me cry a bit.

Peter Jennings death upset me too. He was one of my first celebrity-ish crushes.
  • Princess Diana was super sad for me.

Shockingly sad: Heath, Michael Hutchence (INXS) and Raul Julia <-- random, I know but I adored him!

I'm sure there are others but those are the ones off the top of my head.

  • I've never really gotten upset over a celebrity death. I think the deaths of my friends when I was younger desensitized me. I have gotten the impression that losing five friends between middle school and university is more than most people experience at that age.
    image
  • I can't say that Princess Diana's death really hit me.  My great-great aunt died the same day, so I was really too wrapped up in my own grief to register any for her.  The worst part for me personally is that I am reminded of my own grief every time someone mentions Diana's death.

  • Add me to train Heath.

I sniffled when I heard that his current co-workers at the time would pass around his IPOD after his death. They said he was known for having crazy musical tastes, and it comforted them. TISSUES!

  • I think Kurt Cobain death's was the most devastating to me. River Phoenix being a close second.

  • Never have i cried in the past, but I am a huge Dolly Parton fan, since I was about 10, and her music and book, everything basically, has really played a part in who I am as a person (mostly because I was a fan so young) and I know that I will cry and be a mess when she dies. It's silly, I know, but I know I will.

  • There were some celebrity deaths when I was young that were upsetting - River Phoenix and Kurt Cobain come to mind - but I wonder how much of that was just being a teenager.  I did have a close friend who died in high school, and my reaction was completely different.

It's very sad, just as anyone's death is sad, but I'm not overly affected by someone I didn't know just because they were famous.

Raul Julia was a shocking death! I didn't cry but I was really broken up over it. :(

I was broken up over Whitney Houston's death too...but moreso in a sad, disappointed kind of way.

I was so saddened by this one too.  I loved her.  I was also kind of angry that she refused to see what she was doing to herself.  Weird, I know.

I'm with @julie37619.  I can't remember the last time, if ever, I got emotional over a celebrity death.

That said, I definitely got emotional over 9/11 and Sandy Hook. I didn't know any of the families affected either, and those events are senseless and tragic too, but those events hit home far closer than say, Heath Ledger's death.
This is the same for me.
