NBR: How do you pronounce these names?
Re: NBR: How do you pronounce these names?
my read shelf:
It's the A sound that's throwing me off. I want to say it with a flat A and put the emphasis on the second syllable - uh-LEE - like you pronounce the word alee. We have a lot of Leighs and Ashleighs - I don't think it's the 'leigh' part that will be mis-pronounced.
Giving someone a name is hard, and everyone wants to give their opinion. We didn't tell anyone the names we'd picked out until after either of our girls was born, citing 'bad luck' - even though that's silly and we didn't want people to feel entitled to give their 2 cents (now that I've given you mine...)
my read shelf:
My 1st name has been mispronounced my entire life. I've gotten over it!
I usually correct someone once or twice & then let it go. (My name is Therese pronounced "tuh-rees")
I like the spelling Aleigh but I think it will frequently be pronounced "Ay-Lee"

my read shelf:
1 - AY-lee
2 - AW-lee
I guess I can see where Ally comes from but it's not the first thing that came to mind. My name has been mispronounced and misspelled by entire life. It's a pain in the buttocks. My cousin is "Ally" but her real name is Alana. I say don't torture your child with a crazy spelled name.
And I think it's funny that some of you think the "leigh" could be confused with "weigh, etc.". My name is Leah. That's Lee-uh. I've been called Lay-uh so many times and it hurts my ears. I threatened to change the spelling to Leigha. True story.

I definitely would've seen it as Ahh-Lee.
I agree with you though. I like Ally but I don't really like Allison.
Please don't. Alli is that diet drug that makes you shit your pants if you eat too much.
My philosophy is that you don't start with a nickname you like and work backwards to find a "real name" that fits the nickname. Just pick her name, and then if it lends itself to a nickname, great.

My sweet babies:

The world is your oyster! You can even name one Alleigh and one Aleigh if you want!
Exactly! And if you can't find a version of "Ally" that you like as her legit name - then that's not her name. Move on to something else.
