Re: What's your must-read classic?

  • I was going to say Jane Eyre. Glad to see it's a favorite of others!

    Hands down.....Pride & Prejudice
I was just watching the movie the other day on TV and it made me want to pull it out for my annual re-read.
@JennaHack - Perhaps Mr. Collins has a cousin.

    Classics I always recommend:
    Pride & Prejudice
    To Kill a Mockingbird
    Of Mice & Men
    The Great Gatsby

  • It's kind of off-putting whenever I tell people this, but I also really loved Lolita.  I listened to it, and it was read by Jeremy Irons.  His voice was perfect, for one thing, but also the writing is so, so beautiful.  His use of alliteration was jaw-dropping.  I would find myself going back to hear certain lines again, and repeating them aloud in the car.  Obviously the subject matter is a bit disturbing, but I'm into books that are a little messed up, if they're well written.

I had to read this for a college class and I thought it was very well written as well. I feel weird saying I loved it because of the subject matter, but I thought it was really thought provoking and one of the best books I've read. I often forget about it since I read it so long ago, but it's definitely up there as far as classics go.

Fahrenheit 451  it's the only one that I reread and it's one of my all time faves

eta:  I guess this is really a modern classic, does that count?

Yes, I think it counts.  I've read that one and really enjoyed it.

I've never read Animal Farm and feel like now I should.

I would highly recommend it. Be sure to brush up on the Bolshevik Revolution beforehand. :)

  • I don't really have one. I've tried reading the classics and I can't really get into them. Now, I adore all the JA movies and Jane Eyre but when I go to read them, I just can't get into it.

  • I'm glad to see P&P and The Count already on this list. I second those, though only tCoMC is a brain workout of those two (make sure you buy unabridged).  I will add to this list War of the Worlds. It's excellent.
