    Aleigh -- "uh-LEE"
    Alleigh -- "AH-lee"

ETA - Yeah, I didn't read the whole thread first, because I didn't want the other answers to confuse me.

What about Alli ? It's slightly different, but I don't think it would confuse people as much, though they will still misspell it a lot.

It's the A sound that's throwing me off.  I want to say it with a flat A and put the emphasis on the second syllable - uh-LEE - like you pronounce the word alee.  We have a lot of Leighs and Ashleighs - I don't think it's the 'leigh' part that will be mis-pronounced.

Giving someone a name is hard, and everyone wants to give their opinion.  We didn't tell anyone the names we'd picked out until after either of our girls was born, citing 'bad luck' - even though that's silly and we didn't want people to feel entitled to give their 2 cents (now that I've given you mine...)

  • Why not go some something like Hailey?  It's close enough to Allie.

  • My 1st name has been mispronounced my entire life.  I've gotten over it!  :)  I usually correct someone once or twice & then let it go. (My name is Therese pronounced "tuh-rees")

I like the spelling Aleigh but I think it will frequently be pronounced "Ay-Lee"

Hahaha I really appreciate all the opinions! We will just have to talk it over and figure it out ;-)

  • I don't get that if you like the sound of Ally and you don't want the name pronounced incorrectly what not just name her Ally.??? ::scratches head::

Or pick a different name that your husband and you both like that doesn't remind him of an Alley and that you don't have to worry about the masses pronouncing it incorrectly.

    but Junewhatevas.

  • I guess my point is that if you like the sound of Ally why would you spell it in a way that you think everyone will pronounce it wrong.  It kind of defeats the purpose of naming her Ally? Right?

Compromise... Aleigh was a spelling we both liked

  • Okay, so I'm going to give me initial thoughts even though I read the entire post.  I'm the weird because I thought

    1 - AY-lee
    2 - AW-lee

I guess I can see where Ally comes from but it's not the first thing that came to mind.  My name has been mispronounced and misspelled by entire life.  It's a pain in the buttocks.  My cousin is "Ally" but her real name is Alana.  I say don't torture your child with a crazy spelled name.

And I think it's funny that some of you think the "leigh" could be confused with "weigh, etc.".  My name is Leah.  That's Lee-uh.  I've been called Lay-uh so many times and it hurts my ears.  I threatened to change the spelling to Leigha.  True story.

  • I definitely would've seen it as Ahh-Lee.

I agree with you though. I like Ally but I don't really like Allison.

I am obviously biased, but I kind of hate both those spellings.  My daughter is Allison/Ally.  The spelling of her nickname was kind of arbitrary and it's just her nickname, she can do whatever she wants to it when she's older. Allison is her real name, I love it and it's a family surname.

My philosophy is that you don't start with a nickname you like and work backwards to find a "real name" that fits the nickname.  Just pick her name, and then if it lends itself to a nickname, great.
Or name her the nickname. Who says her name has to be all formal and whatnot. She's your kid, name her what you like! Junewhatevs.

The world is your oyster! You can even name one Alleigh and one Aleigh if you want!

Exactly!  And if you can't find a version of "Ally" that you like as her legit name - then that's not her name. Move on to something else.

  • One of my friends jokingly want us the name the baby Glory if it's a girl because of the cruise ship we were on for her wedding. I vetoed it and DH said he can envision someone adding "hole" to it.
Whether or not you find your own way, you're bound to find some way. If you happen to find my way, please return it, as it was lost years ago. I imagine by now it's quite rusty.”
