NBR: Help! Housewarming gift on a budget?

We're headed to a friend's housewarming party this weekend. I don't think they're expecting gifts, but I'd like to take something. The kicker is that, for a few reasons, I'm on a super tight budget this month! I'd like to get something cute or funny, but I need it to be as inexpensive as possible.

Ideas?  TIA!

  • I always take a bottle of wine or if they're not drinkers I'll bake a cake or make some dip and have them keep the glass pan.

  • We usually bring a bottle for a housewarming.  Sorry, that's probably not very helpful.

You could get a pretty serving dish from Homegoods or TJ Maxx or a store like that and bake something for the party.
  • I second a bottle of their favorite drink, a GC to their favorite coffee place, or baked goods.

Does he or she have a green thumb? If so, maybe a houseplant? How about some nice hand soap? I have bought a bucket, filled it with cleaning supplies, and slapped a cute bow on it.

  • I'm not sure how much time you have but maybe you can get a plain plate/platter from the dollar store and write their name on it?

    Something like this:

I know they have that thing where you write on mugs with a Sharpie and bake them, I would think this may be the same kind of thing?

    Good Luck!

This is a great idea, but I SO do not have the required skill set. lol

Maybe use stickers? and just mention that it is more for decoration then actual use? Or maybe use stencils?

I'm not a huge wine person, but I usually take a bottle of wine.  Because I'm weird like that, I usually buy Mad Housewife or some other bottle with a crazy label.  That way it can be used as a decoration if they don't drink it.  (My wine rack is full of funny wine.  We don't drink it.)

My favorite wine is Relax, a Reisling in a big blue bottle.  It's about $10 at Target.

  • @shepherdjel - I saw that on Pinterest and am liking it! Definitely a good option.

Target by you sells wine?!  damn NY and their stupid liquor laws.

That being said, I'm usually a bottle of wine person. Maybe you can go get an inexpensive set of glasses at HomeGoods or TJ Maxx and a bottle white and a bottle of red wines (2 buck chuck?) with a corkscrew or something and make a basket, or margarita glasses with some margarita mix and a shaker?

Are they in a new area? maybe you could do a book/folder with different takeout menus and a gift certificate for a pizzeria?

  • Bottle of wine or house plant is how I usually go.

Recently I made a "Just in case you forgot.." type basket with typical things new homeowners need around like gorilla glue, 3M hooks or tabs, goo be gone, etc. in a bucket with some tissue paper.  It was a big hit for the gift getters.

  • are they new to home ownership? you could get a book along the lines of What's a Homeowner to Do?  I recently borrowed it from the library and some of it is pretty basic but I definitely learned quite a bit of stuff that I probably should have learned earlier considering I've been in my house 4 years, lol.

  • DH and I just bought a house in April of 2012.  I'm trying to think of some gifts that we got that were fairly inexpensive but meaningful.

My grandmother filled a basket with cleaning supplies, including laundry detergent, dish detergent, toilet cleaner, etc.  So that was nice.

We got quite a few bottles of wine, so that's always a winner.

Moving of course always brings expenses, so gift cards to home depot, lowes, etc. are always helpful.

I also like the idea of going to homegoods, ross, tj maxx, etc. and getting a set of glasses and pairing with a bottle of wine, or a nice dish and put something tasty in it.

Don't think too hard about it and don't stretch your budget too far. I know they'll be grateful for the thought no matter what you come up with.
