Re: I want to talk about books again

  • Oh Little House <3. Also Anne of Green Gables. Paradise Lost is a great one I'd forgotten about.

What is this Giver you all speak of?

I read the summary and it sounds very Brave New World/Handmaid's Tale - like.  Is that roughly accurate?
How did you not read The Giver in school!?

When I reread it, yes, I realized just how dystopian-ish it is. I didn't remember ANY of it from reading it back when I was younger. It is really an excellent book. I wouldn't relate it to Brave New World (which I'm feeling fuzzy on, so I definitely need to reread that one too!), and I haven't read  Handmaid's Tale, so I can't weight in on how close it is to that.

It's not a long book; you could whip right through it. Definitely pick it up!

ETA: Now that I'm thinking about it, I guess it is sooooort of like 1984, with lots of control by those of authority/super strict rules everyone sort of follows without question.

I'm old, that's how I managed to avoid reading it in school.
You're not that old! Then again, I'm sure its inclusion in the curriculum could vary pretty widely across states.
Oh no, I mean literally. Looks like it was published in '93, I was a jr in HS. I never ran across it in college :)

This is me too.  I graduated from HS in 1993.

I graduated in 99, but didn't read it, probably because it was too 'new' of a book and our district was too poor to buy us up to date materials.
