Do You Like Audio Books?

I've tried and I've tried, but I just can't seem to pay attention to audio books. I've tried to listen to them while I'm driving and while I'm prepping for supper and while I'm cleaning the house. But my mind just wonders elsewhere. I have to be looking at the words to focus on what's going on. What do you think about them?

  • I'm listening to one right now.

  • I like them, but the narrator has to be good to hold my attention.

  • I don't have the time for them.  My commute is super short and I read a book in the eve so I can still converse with my H.  I like the idea of them, although I wonder if my mind will wander when I read them too.

  • I love them!! It's always better with a great narrator.
  • When I get to that place you described- I have to turn it off. Even if the book/narrator is great, my mind wanders eaily.

We drove to visit the inlaws this summer. One way is 11 hours. It took us both ways to listen to one 7-hour audio book.

With that being said- I love them at work. :)

  • I love them!  I listen on my commute and while I work around the house.

  • I love audio books.  I listen during my commute, which is only 15 minutes each way.  When I get home from work, I put on my headphones and listen while I take the dog for a 30 minute walk.  Then I usually keep listening while I start dinner, do laundry, etc. Lately I've been listening in the morning as well - while I put on makeup and make my lunch.  I can't listen without doing something else - that is when my mind wanders.
  • I love them.  I listen to them daily.

Love them!  I listen in the car, working out, cleaning, cooking, at work...

  • I am like you and tend to zone out and "forget" to listen.  I tried listening in the car, and then I would notice that I was all focused on my driving and I just missed what happened in the book for the last 15 minutes.  Then I tried listening while cooking and found that I was concentrating on dinner and missing everything in the book.

I guess I am just more of a visual person.  So I have given up on audiobooks.

  • I only listen to audiobooks if I have already read the book.  I can't focus enough to stay on top of the story.  That being said I love to listen to the audio version of my favorite books like Outlander, Hunger Games, etc since I never feel like making the time to do an actual reread.

  • I also feel like audiobooks help me get more out of the story. When I read the first time through, I tend to race to get to the end. It's why I reread a lot too.

  • I'm like you. I find that I can't pay attention if I'm doing something else (working, driving, etc). So I've basically given up on them, which is fine by me.

  • I go through phases with them.  I'll go a couple of months where all I want to listen to in the car is book after book after book, but I always hit a wall where it doesn't matter how good the book or narrator is, I just don't want to hear someone reading to me for a while.  So I take a little time off from audiobooks and go back to music in the car.

I find that sine i read so slowly lately, and I tend to pick big books to read, audiobooks help me get in a lot of the popular fiction that I tend to feel like I'm missing out on.  I also like them for classics that I really want to read, but sometimes find that the language makes them a bit tedious to read.
  • I used to listen to them a lot but I got frustrated with the narrators, if they don't have a good narrator then it ruins the book for me :-( I have veered from them, I tend to like the book a lot better when I read it.

  • I love audiobooks!  I go through phases with them, but that happens with actually reading a book too.  Sometimes my mind is just going to wander and other times I love to sit and have someone read a book to me.  I've been listening a lot lately while painting my nails which is one of my new favorite things.

  • I love them and listen to them every day. I can't just listen to music anymore. If it's not a great audiobook, it's going to be harder for me to pay attention. If it's a good one,  I won't be able to stop listening.

You need to find a good one!

I agree!  Audiobooks force me to slow down and absorb what is happening.
  • I have only been able to complete one audibook.  For me, it has to depend on the narrator.  I'm going to try to give more of them a shot because I have long drives in my near future.

I love audio books. I listen in the car, while I workout and while I do stuff around the house.

ETA: I also listen while I'm in the tub. Saves getting my books wet!

  • I love them. I listen to them when cleaning/exercising/knitting. dh and I will get one from the library and listen to it when we travel which a) kills time when driving b) gives soemthing nee to talk about when we take a break from the story or get where we're going.

  • I love audiobooks.  I have about a 25 minute commute to and from work so I spend about an hour a day listening most days then on Sundays when I bake, I usually listen to one or a podcast.  The narrator is really what matters though!

  • I really like audiobooks.  If the narrator annoys me, I can't listen to them though.  My husband and I listen to them on road trips, and it really helps the time fly by.  We are going to get Under the Dome and try to listen to that together soon.
  • I love them for when I'm driving familiar paths and walking around on campus.

I'm pretty picky about narrators, but there are a ton of really well done audiobooks out there.

  • My mind always wanders. I don't really use them because when I do, I only get about 80% of the story. Sometimes I get them from the library for rereads.

  • I love audiobooks!  I listen when I'm getting ready in the morning, driving when I don't have anyone else in the car, walking from my car to my desk & between buildings, and when I'm doing chores around the house.
  • Love them. I have a 45 minute commute and it really makes the time go faster. I also listen to them while I mow the lawn or do housework.

  • I'm an audiobook addict. I always have one going in the car for my commute and usually one on my phone that I'll listen to with headphones around the house while I clean. If I feel myself zoning out, I'll switch to music for awhile until I feel like jumping back into the story.

  • I love them for road trips or long drives. Sometimes I listen to them at work instead of music. But if the narrator is not very good that detracts from the story- a lot.
