Will you be getting a Flu Shot?

I am reading so many different views on getting the flu shot while pregnant. I work in a hospital and the flu shot is STRONGLY recommended. We have already had a break out of 6 confirmed flu cases in our hospital. I am already getting a doctors note so that I do not get floated outside of my unit (to Pediatrics or Pediatric Intensive Care where they always have atleast 75% of their patient population with flu/respiratory issues). I work in NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) so I don't have to worry about it in my unit.

Sorry for the book. Just wondering on what you have heard about getting the flu shot while pregnant, and whether or not you plan on getting one. Thanks in advance!

  • I will get a flu shot this year and I did get a flu shot last year while I was pregnant. Everything I read said that it was recommended.

I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love.
  • I got one while pregnant because my midwife recommended it. I didn't get one last year and got the flu twice so I'm getting one this year (mostly because we plan to TTC starting in Dec or Jan).

  • Get it!  I don't think babies can get it until they are 6 months old.  It's the only way to protect them.  Flu + babies = dangerous!

  • My babies are due during flu season and have an increased chance of being premature. 100% yes.

  • @jnadoreshn, I'm surprised that flu shots aren't required for your position. I would have thought that anyone working in the NICU would have to get it (with a few exceptions for allergies, etc.).

  • They use the term required loosely. If we do not get it then we have to be gowned gloved and masked whenever we are within three feet of a patient. We are very strict during flu season. No children under the age of 13. And if parent have flu like symptoms they are not allowed in the unit just because of how susceptible our little babies are.

  • I got it while pregnant (in 2nd tri) and I got it last year and so did Ava Nichol at 6 mo and 9 mo. I am hoping they will have it available for Ava Nichol at her 18 mo appt at the end of the month and I will ask my primary care at my appt next Friday.

  • I got one while pregnant with DS. He got one when he was 6ish months because I worked in a school aka germ factory and he was in day care. DH and I also got them. All of us will be getting them again this year while we are in the recommended groups. Once we are not a part of that we will not get them.

I never had one until I was pregnant.

  • Another thing ladies, if you're planning on BFing you should absolutely get the flu shot. Like someone already mentioned, babies can't get the vaccine until 6 months so you'll be passing on your antibodies to them.

  • I was sooo nervous to get it last year because I was only 8 weeks pregnant, but I work in a hospital too and I talked with a couple doctors who said "you better get it." Like they said it's worse to get the flu especially being pregnant. I got it and was completely fine. I would definitely say get it!!

P.S I'm so excited your finally over here!

  • I had one last year while pregnant and will get it again this year. M will be 6 months old in a couple of weeks so she'll get one and DH will get one too. I'm debating asking my parents to get one as well because they are around her quite a bit.

I'd rather get the shot than have to be gowned and masked all the time.  When I worked inpatient, I hated having to be gowned and gloved for contact patients.  No thank you.  Plus, it really benefits your baby to have that immunity when they are born.

My hospital now requires it.  But I would get it anyway and so will Parker at his appointment next month.  It's not worth the risk.

You're in a high risk group while pregnant and your baby is also in a high risk group. Since your baby can't get the shot until she is 6 months old, this is your only chance to try to give her some immunity. Plus what if someone gave you the flu and you passed it to your baby because you weren't immunized? I don't think there is such a thing as "too late."

I'm required to get a flu shot at work but I would have gotten one last year while pregnant and DH, LO and I are all getting ours this year.

  • Hmm...I knew it was recommended for pg women but I didn't realize how necessary it really is.  I guess I'll actually get one.  I've never gotten one and I think I've only ever had the flu once in my life.  Is this something DH should get, too??

    Generally, yes.

    According to the CDC's website:

The timing of flu is very unpredictable and can vary from season to season. Flu activity most commonly peaks in the U.S. in January or February. However, seasonal flu activity can begin as early as October and continue to occur as late as May.

So it might not be as important for you being due in April as it is for Jan/Feb parents-to-be, but still worth asking your OB about since the virus could still be circulating then.

Good to know!  Thanks!  DH and I will both be at my next OB appt on the 7th.  We'll definitely ask then!
