Re: Happy Friday!! What are you reading?

  • I am reading Gone Girl.  I like it so far.
    my read shelf:
Cathy (CathyL7910)'s book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • I just finished Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail.  I didn't love it but it was an interesting story and pretty well-written none-the-less.  The main reason I didn't like it was because I didn't care for the author as a person and also because it's pretty similar to A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson.  It was #58.  Not sure what I'm going to pick up next.
Kristen's book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)

  • I'm reading The F-It List by Julie Halpern. It's a fun read, despite what could be depressing subject matter (a girl is helping her friend with cancer complete her bucket list).

It will be book #146 toward my goal of 200.

  • I just finished the "Fire and Thorns" trilogy by Rae Carson.  It reminded me a bit of the Seven Realms series.

I'll be starting Mind Games this weekend for our PNR discussion on Thursday.

  • I'm reading The Girl You Left Behind by Jojo Moyes.  So far I really like it.  It's 36/52 for the year, which puts me behind by a few, but I'm hoping that doing FBC will help me catch up a bit.

  • Swamplandia! and The Light Between Oceans. I'm About halfway through Swamplandia!, and it is good, albeit a little strange. I just started The Light Between Oceans, so we'll see. They are #49 and 50.

Vellichor: The strange wistfulness of used bookstores
  • I'm listening to The Dream Thieves (book 2 of the Raven boys), and it's great. Really great. I'm somehow proud of the author's growth since Shiver, even though I have nothing to do with it.

@UFCasey Fire and Thorns grew on me. At first, I didn't like the main character, but maybe a month after I read it, I was still thinking about her. Since then, I've fallen into the books. Love.

Too soon to tell what I think of it.  It's #24 for my goal of 25 (which I'm def. going to meet!).

  • I just finished Storm Front by Jim Butcher today.  I'm about 75% done with Siege and Storm right now.  I'm going to be listening to Bed of Roses today as well just for a change of pace.  The last few that I've read have all been fantasy stuff.

  • @ThisModernLove - I really liked that book, and now I wish I had thought to listen to it instead of reading it.  I heart Tony Bourdain.

@Ali2b1g - I love the mini series that HBO did with Bank of Brothers, and I've been saying for years that I wanted to read that book.  I'm glad to hear that it's good.  A few of the guys wrote their own autobiographies about that time, and I'd like to check out a few of them too.  I know Dick Winters was one of them.

I'm almost done with NOS4A2 by Joe Hill.  It's SO GOOD.  I've read it in under 2 weeks, which I think is a record for me.  I think I have 50 pages left, so I'll probably finish it tonight.

I'm about 2/3 through Raven Boys on audiobook.  I like it, but it took me a while to be able to keep all of the characters straight, and the whole psychic energy thing doesn't really do it for me.  I guess it's not really my style book, but I am enjoying it nonetheless.  At least I find that I care about the characters, and I do want to see where it all goes.

These are numbers 19 and 20 for me.  I'm already ahead of what I read last year, so I feel accomplished.  No goals or challenges, though.

Still reading The Host and plan to start Me Before You tomorrow :-)
I'm glad you finally got it!

Do you know if it's the same narrator as Raven Boys?  I keep going back and forth about the Raven Boys narrator.  Sometimes I really like his voice and the inflection and tone that he uses for different characters, and sometimes it drives me nuts.  He sounds like a cross between Casey Kasem and Wilfred Brimley.

  • Finishing up HP 1 reread.  Then I got School Spirits, The Disenchantments and The Girl You Left Behind from the library so one of those will be next.

Listening to Don't Go by Lisa Scottoline.  The narrator's voices/accents are HORRENDOUS.

    #s 75 and 76 for the year.

  • Is Everybody Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling (eh, it's no Bossypants.)

Scarlet by Marissa Meyer (just started but I'm little fascinated by this Wolf character.)

  • Mind Without A Home: A Memoir of Schizophrenia.

I am torn.  On the one hand, I am fascinated by the story and the insight into mental illness.  On the other had, the book is disjointed and lacks focus.  But it's written by someone with schizophrenia, so it feels appropriately disjointed.  I'm just not sure what I think yet.

@nocturnalintimacy - Yeah she definitely grows as the books go along. I will say I was shocked by the death in the first book, I kept waiting for something miraculous to happen, but nope. I liked how the series ended though!

@SusieBw I read the Raven Boys and loved it. I am not feeling the narrator of the audiobook. I think he's perfect for Ronan, but the rest of the characters sound ridiculous. When he does Persephone, I laugh because it's this super gravelly voice trying to be a tiny woman. Ridic.

  • still reading "this man" hope to finish it this weekend on our weekend get away.
