OMG this book. SO GOOD.
I've been wanting to read a book by Andrew Smith, but The Marbury Lens and its sequel seemed a little scary for me. I'd heard nothing but good things about this one, so I got it from the library.
It's 1st person from the POV of a 14 year old boy, and BOY is it authentic. I really felt like I was in the mind of one of my students. Ryan Dean, the narrator, is smart and funny and observant in addition to being a total pervert. The voice is just SO REAL and so awesome.
The book starts off funny and light (it opens with him being dunked in a toilet by 2 seniors), and it slowly gets more serious. But the humor and heart stay going throughout, and there were some serious LOL moments. I don't want to talk to much about what the book is about, but the ending seriously gutted me.
Any fans of contemp YA...I can't recommend this one enough. Utterly fantastic. But you have to be ready for that 14 yo boy POV. Heh.
