Outfits for a newborn in winter...

We live in northeastern Pennsylvania and January/February tend to be bitterly cold some days. Last winter we went 5 days with temperatures near zero, it was awful.

My MIL bought us a snow suit to "bring baby home in", but I'm not so sure it's something that can be worn in a car seat. It's relatively thick and plushy. Not to mention, it's 0-3 months so, it could end up huge on the kid.

Do I need a winter coat for an infant? Can I just use blankets and avoid the outside? I'm totally okay with avoiding the outside in the winter!

So, I guess my question is... Winter mommies - what did you do?

I would avoid winter coats. I would do blankets.

  • We just used blankets and avoided outside. Get one of the shower cap style car seat covers. Those things are crazy warm and you just have to unzip it when you get baby in a warmed up car. My son actually ended up sweaty in it sometimes because he was so warm and all he ever wore was pants, long sleeve onesie and socks. Sometimes a hat but he didn't leave them on for very long. I'm in Ohio so not too different.

  • I plan on doing a lot of the fleece union suits and 3 piece sets that I've seen around, mostly from Target cause I get all my clothes there.

Snowsuits are a no in car seats. The puffiness makes it so the straps don't sit snuggly and baby wouldn't be protected in a crash. I see a lot of people just do fleece blankets tucked around the baby after they are buckled in or the car seat covers. I registered for the Bundle Me by JJ Cole.

  • @BioGirl the bundle me by jj cole goes between baby and seat and is technically a no-no. I'd recommend finding a shower cap style one like I posted instead.

  • We are just planning on blankets. They aren't supposed to have jackets/snowsuits in the car seat.

  • I agree with PP's about blankets. I will just dress him in warm clothes then cover up with blankies after he's buckled in. Especially since his only outside time at that age will be from car to building.

  • I would get a cover like one of these:

Jolly Jumper Sneak a Peek Sneak-a-Peek Infant Carseat Cover Deluxe - Black
You just want to make sure that they are like a shower cap and go over the top, not behind the baby. As PP mentioned snowsuits really aren't safe to wear in the car seat plus I think your baby would overheat. My son was always so hot in his car seat, even in the winter. I would keep the cover on only while walking to the car and then I had to open it up for the ride or he would be drenched in sweat. I mostly kept him in the sleep n plays during the winter and that was what I brought him home from the hospital in as well.

I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love.
  • All of what @BackseatDriver said!! I had to unzip the cover and sometimes even pull the cover off if it was a longer ride because he would over heat.

I'm glad you pointed this out. It's what I had registered for too but I just switched it to a shower cap style.

  • We had a car seat cover. I would put a blanket over him under the car seat cover and put pants and socks on him as well as a hat. I had to take him out one evening when it was below zero so I put him in footie pj's, folded the mitten parts over his hands, put a hat on him, several blankets and then the cover. He was born 10/12 so he was still little during the winter months. I never had a problem. I also would do hoodies so that I could put the hood up over the hat. I would not use the snow suit.

I noticed that when I was looking at the website. I don't think that's the one I registered for. I'll need to look at it again next time I'm in the store. I thought it was the one that just went over the car seat. Thanks!

No problem! R was born in January and I really worried about him keeping warm but it worked out great!

  • We're in New England and due in January.  Our take home outfits (we got a boy one and a girl one) are fleece sleep n play type things.  We did get hats and mittens to match them, but we're planning on really covering baby up with blankets and possibly a car seat cover.
