If you do not move the location of the sink, stove and fridge, you will save a substantial amount.

There are some nice high definition laminates out there worthy of consideration.

Shop for bargains, but to not buy the lowest end of cabinets. or other products.

I believe in saving the $$ needed and paying cash for almost everything. Save first - then spend in my motto by which I live. A loan or using credit cards will cost you more.

Ditto. You get a better deal no financing and offering real money on the table. And the benefit not having a bill really is priceless. Something like a kitchen is not a need unlike a car though.

I agree that you should pay cash for everything and end up paying less in the end, but it is absolutely NOT true that you get a better deal on a car if you pay cash. The dealer would prefer you to finance because they make money on that end also. Sorry, off topic, but I had to correct pp.

When we redo our kitchen we will have to replace all of the cabinets since they were last done about 50 to 60 years ago and they are starting to really fall apart. We will wait until we get our student loan debt under control (MW's paid off) before we do this.

We'll redo our kitchen at some point. We'll be keeping the appliances we have. We'll need a new floor (and it's an open floor plan so our entire main level - about 800sqft is how much we would have to replace), new cabinets, and new counter. Our floor will be around $4000. Only reason we'll have to replace the floor is because we're going to move our counters around, instead of an island we're going to make an XL peninsula. I would think we'd spend around $1500-$2000 on cabinets, and no idea for counters because we're not to that point yet. DH and FIL are very handy, our previous home was almost entirely gutted and redesigned because it was in our price range, in an ok area, but we wanted the rooms different so DH will do it all himself.

You can likely remodel for under $10k but you will need to make lots of "economy decisions"...flooring will need to be vinyl or linoleum (linoleum is the new cool thing!), cabinets will need to be lowend - very basic. Ikea? Imports from china? and of course laminate countertops which you already figured. I would nearly die to be able to remodel our kitchen. Last summer we went with a $200 face-lift, but I can see needing to invest in some updates in the next 5 years.

we found a great counter paint that looks like granite, it's held-up pretty well for the past year and for $75 it was way cheaper than buying new counters. Our house cam with flat-solid-red laminate counters that looked like a nightmare left from the 70's...so pretty much anything was better than that. so we did the counters and repainted the walls, it made a huge difference.

It helped that the previous owners had DIY installed ceramic tile floors.

We're currently working with a 20 year old oven and 25 year old dishwasher, so I see appliances in our future. I make my own breads and bagels...my last batch was really unevenly cooked, for now I'll have to figure out rotating things part-way through cooking...but eventually I'll want an oven upgrade.

if you're updating appliances go with a local shop, the box stores get things made with less expensive parts and they're a PITA to deal with when things break. Check consumer reports for appliances so you have a good idea what you're getting (you'll notice the box store model numbers are often a couple characters different from whats in consumer reports, that's a good indicator that it may contain different parts. Our local shop gives a discount if you're buying multiple appliances at the same time.
