NBR: Do you pass out candy on Halloween?

If so, how many kids do you normally get? What do you give out?

Re: NBR: Do you pass out candy on Halloween?

  • Usually we do pass out candy.

I give out full sized Hershey, M&M's, snickers, reeses, crunch bars, kit-kats, milky ways, twix, baby ruths, butterfingers, etc.

we usually get between 20-40 kids.

We did when we were living in a subdivision in SC. Now that we are back in rural DE, we don't. In SC, we gave out Sweet Tarts & Nerds, which are my favorite non-chocolate candies. We used to get a ton of kids there. I am guessing close to 200. It was crazy. My dogs would have a nervous breakdown every year.

Booney, I wish I lived in your neighborhood! Full-size?! That's awesome!

  • We usually do.  I pass out the fun size snickers, butterfinger, milky way and baby ruths.  We have never had more than 5-6 kids no matter where we have lived in our town  so I usually wind up eating it.

I am not sure if we will pass out candy this year because every time someone knocks on the door, our dog goes BSC and barks like a lunatic.  I don't really want him waking Julia up.

  • We have been living out in the country with no kids nearby. We always have some candy on hand but end up ::having:: to eat it all ourselves.
I will have some on hand at the new place but have no idea what to expect. We will still be in the country but more neighbours and probably kids.
  • This year will be our first in our new house. There are a ton of kids in the neighborhood, so I'm guessing we will get a lot of them at our house. I plan to peruse the aisles of Target and pick out whatever candy catches my eye.

  • We don't get anyone one so no, we don't give out candy. We bought candy the first year in our house because we weren't sure, but since we live on a very busy street with a longer driveway, I'm also not surprised no one shows up.

  • We don't.  We live on a busy road with no sidewalk so we have no kids.  I'm happy to turn off the lights and pretend I'm not home.

  • Nope!  Those little whippersnappers need to stay off my lawn!

  • Yep! We do a mixture of mini chocolate bars and lollipops/non chocolate. We are in a suburb so get quite a bit of kids.

  • Related: last year a group of 5 teenagers that looked to be at least 16/17 came by. They didn't have any costumes on and didn't say "trick or treat". Just got in line behind some kids and when it was their turn, they held out their pillow cases for me to put candy in. I told them to come back when they had costumes on. They called me " an old hag" and gave me the finger.

  • We do. We like to decorate the yard too with with spider webs and stuff, though we are practically the only ones on the street to. We pass out mostly fun sized candies. Don't know what yet this year. Hopefully candy that I don't like so I'm not tempted to eat much of it.
We maybe get 20 kids at the most.

  • Our first couple years we got a bunch of kids, and the last couple we get maybe 5 :-( I love to see all these kids come with cute costumes! We have gone to my in laws and pass out whatever they have since they get a bunch of kids!

  • Our neighborhood has some houses that really get decked out, but we live in a condo building, so we're not really allowed to decorate.  Our street is a combo of single family, two-flats and condos, all with big iron fences.  Generally the single family and two-flat houses will prop their gates if they're giving out candy, but the kids never approach the condo buildings.  I'd have to sit on my front steps and wave at them to do it (and then their parents would probably think I was a weirdo and skip us anyway).  We bought candy the first two years here, but I ended up eating it all, so we quit.

  • We do! I love it. We haven't had a "normal" Halloween in our house between travelling, hurricanes and snow storms, so I don't know how many kids is typical. My husband already bought 8 bags of candy, though, so we should be set!

  • No. I hate Halloween and feel like passing out candy only encourages the practice. #bahhumbug

  • We pass out candy at our house but I'm not the one actually passing it out.  I make my sister and her husband do it.  We have a trick or treat get together with our immediate family.  All of us with kids take them out around the neighborhood and those without kids usually stay back and pass out candy.  We get a ridiculous amount of kids.  Its like half the town comes to our development to trick or treat.

  • Yes, of course.  This is our first Halloween in this apartment, though, so I am not sure if kids will come or how many there will be.  there are some kids in the building, so hopefully they will at least come. :)

  • Yep. We love Halloween. We usually dress up to hand out candy, or at least my H does.

It varies from year to year what type of candy I buy. Usually whatever I have a coupon for!  This year I have twizzlers, 3 musketeers, and twix. I have enough to give one twizzler and one piece of chocolate.  I've planned for about 60 kids this year.  The first year in our house we had over 70, but haven't had quite that many the last few years.

Don't feel bad. Last year, a boy (maybe a pre-teen) came to my door and I asked him if he was supposed to be Justin Bieber. He gave me a crappy look and said "No". Too bad that little turd had already been given his candy!

  • When I was married, we lived in the middle of nowhere with a long, steep driveway, so that was a no. And now I live in an apartment complex and do not do it here either. There are residental neighborhoods surrounding our complex, so I would imagine the kids all go there to trick-or-treat.

Random aside: In our town (and many of the surrounding ones), trick-or-treat is from 6PM to 8PM the Friday before Halloween. I will be at work until 7PM that day, so I will miss out on most of it anyway.

  • We gave out candy the last two years but we get 200+ kids as a lot of families drive into the neighborhood. Luckily friends of ours bought in the neighborhood so we're going to go in on buying candy and pass out as team because we went through 10 big bags last year in the first hour and a half of the fun-size.

  • We usually do, I'd say we get about 40 kids. This year I have a dentist appointment on Halloween so I'll just put a "sorry, no candy" note on the door and pick up one bag for when I get home in case anybody comes by late.

  • I got two kids last year. It was weird. The tradition here is different, and I think I was supposed to make them sing (they seem to have Halloween confused slightly with Christmas caroling, but whatever). I answered the door and found two kids in costumes. I grabbed the candy I had in a tin on the counter (mini Snickers and Starburst from my birthday box from the US) and held it out. They seemed confused. I was confused that they were confused. Awkward all around.

  • We get around 200 kids. We live in a popular starter-home type neighborhood, so there are tons of kids around. I LOVE to pass out candy but working 2nd shift I only get to when Halloween falls on a weekend. DH is a crotchety old man when it comes to handing out candy on Halloween and if I'm not there, he bails and goes out with friends or hides in the basement.
