NBR: Do you pass out candy on Halloween?

Re: NBR: Do you pass out candy on Halloween?

  • We always buy tons of candy to give out. The house we were renting would get anywhere from 60-80 kids so we couldn't do full size.

Last year we bought about half the amount of candy, but we live in an apartment complex across from a large subdivision.

We got one trick or treater.

  • We do.  I usually buy the big mixed bag of fun-size chocolate candy from Costco.. it has Snickers, Twix, M&Ms, Baby Ruth, 3 Musketeers, etc.  We give 2 per kid.  Here, we get about 45 kids every year.

  • I love to pass out candy. We usually get around 30 kids. We hand out fun sized Hershey treats.

  • We get about 100 kids.  My street is the main artery in a historic residential neighborhood, so we're always busy.  I pass out whatever good candy is on sale - not Reeses because I will eat them all myself before the Trick or Treaters arrive.  My husband and I take turns taking our daughter out trick or treating so the other can stay home and pass out candy.  We always go crazy with the outdoor decorations - "bloody" tarps, graveyard, spooky music, jack-o-lanterns, strobe lights, spiderwebs covering every inch of the shrubbery.  Other families on the block decorate, too, and one family passes out hotdogs to everyone.  It feels like a block party/trick or treat.  One of my favorite nights all year!
  • No, only because we live on a busy main road.  We get no kids. At the top of our street it's all side roads and there are tons of kids. One year we even left the whole bowl outside just in case and it was all there when we got back.  We just take our kids out.

  • We did when we were living in a subdivision in SC. Now that we are back in rural DE, we don't. In SC, we gave out Sweet Tarts & Nerds, which are my favorite non-chocolate candies. We used to get a ton of kids there. I am guessing close to 200. It was crazy. My dogs would have a nervous breakdown every year.

Booney, I wish I lived in your neighborhood! Full-size?! That's awesome!

    What part of SC?
We used to live in Aiken.

  • Yes, but we don't get that many kids. It's strange because we live in a big subdivision, right near an elementary school, but I think it may be because we don't have a sidewalk on our side of the street. Kids stick to the otherside.

I give out something different every year.

  • I'm the Halloween nut in my house, and I do all the decorating and throw a party and go nuts with the candy.  The first year in our house we had like 4 trick or treaters, I think because the lady who lived in our house was frootloops and they were scared to come up the path.  After we had a driveway installed we get all kinds of kids.

  • I try to be busy or hide in our basement until trick or treat hours are over. I'm a Halloween grinch until my kids force me to do more.

  • Nope, our dog would lose his mind. And it would be a total pita to keep him from getting out.

Plus I'm not a huge Halloween fan. Just call me Jen Lancaster, I totally hide in the dark.

  • This is our first Halloween in this neighborhood so I have no idea what to expect.

My biggest question is what to do with Em - do we take her TOTing first then hand out candy? Does one person go TOTing and one person hands out candy?  WHAT IS HALLOWEEN PARENT PROTOCOL?????

  • We do when we aren't out trick or treating. I'll shut the lights off by 8 though in hopes they will leave us alone so the kids can get to bed.
