Cameras

Does anyone have a DSLR, and if so do you ever take if off the automatic mode? And if you do take the pictures manually, was it that hard to learn the lenses and aperture and all of that stuff?

I'm debating asking for one for Christmas, but I haven't used an actual camera since I've had an iPhone. I just don't know how practical it would be, and if I should just stick to my phone or get a better point and shoot one. I would like to start taking better quality photos of the kids, especially on holidays and vacations.

Sorry for the ramble lol.

Re: Cameras

  • I thought about a dslr but I just got a better point and shoot. Its a Canon with a 30x zoom and you can play more with the lighting and colors. So far I love it, especially the zoom to get pictures of the kids while they play.

  • I have a Canon Rebel...I love it, but I'm not really qualified to do anything but automatic lol. I even took a class on how to do the manual stuff you're talking about, but didn't try to use what I learned quick enough and forgot it. My friend however taught herself and takes great pics. I still think the pics taken on automatic are excellent and better than what I take on my point and shoot and way better than the iPhone (I personally hate the iPhone camera, even though most people love it)

  • I have one and I use it on automatic- and I rarely use it bc it's so big to carry anywhere. BUT, it is on my list of things to really learn to use.
  • I haven thinking of getting one for Christmas as well. I feel like every 2-3 years we get a new camera and we end up with similar issues as time goes on. Figured maybe finally investing in a good camera might be worth it. Contemplating between the Canon  and the Nikon. Seems like most of my friends prefer the Nikon but I have no idea which one is better.

  • @ohlalala157 - I used to work for a photographer and it seems like the Canon v. Nikon argument is more of a personal preference than anything else. Some of the guys on his team used Canon and some used Nikon.

I've put my canons through a lot and they've never died on me, even after being submersed in a shower... if you have to replace cameras every 2-3 years, get it from Best Buy and get the warrenty. We did and I cracked my screen, they replaced it for full price we paid. that's why I upgraded because we already had a $200 credit.

  • Thanks guys! I'm thinking of getting the Canon Rebel t3i. It's gone down in price since last Christmas, and I'm hoping the closer it gets to Christmas the more it will drop. My mom got it last year. Even though she can't figure out her iPhone, the camera does take amazing pictures even on automatic mode. It's still quite a bit of money right now, so I'm going to keep my eye out to see if the price goes down.

  • I have a Canon P90X. Its a DSL not a DSLR though. I would start with something like that unless you really know what you are doing. There is probobly a $300-$400 price difference between a DSL and a DSLR as well depending on brand. My camera has all kind of different settings takes really great pictures when I take the time to change them. The main difference besides price is the amount of pixels the photo holds and how fast the shutter speed is. The pictures are clearer and brighter and you have more options for better pictures with lower light and night shots. The DSL adjustments are all digital, the DSLR are a mix. You change all the settings digitally, but adjust the lense by hand instead of a button.

You could always go to a camera shop and ask. They would have more knowledge than someone at Best Buy.
