Ditto the rest.. I definitely think you handled it very well- and it sounds like they did also. What a relief it must be!

I am glad it worked out RAB. I have a feeling you could never be a jerk.

I'm late to the party, but I am on team "Not a Jerk," but this is also coming from someone who probably will not spend Turkey Day with ILs if SIL and BIL are bringing their newborn. It's just too hard.
I hope everything goes well tonight! I'm glad they were willing to tell you to make you feel more comfortable. Kudos to your brother and his wife! (Can they give my ILs tips?)
TTC #1 since Feb. '12. dx: "unexplained" IF

11/17/2014 - ACTIVE AND WAITING!
Pregnancy was never the end goal; being a mom was.
I've been holding out on GP: I got drunk once and started a blog: Here it is (11/7 update)
I was trying to figure out a situation where I could imagine you as a jerk and I couldn't do it. Glad it worked out and I'm glad you were brave enough to ask for what you needed.
I don't think you're a jerk, honey. You're being sensitive to your feelings as well as being sensitive to their gender reveal. You don't want to have an emotional reaction that may cloud their moment and that is okay.
I hope tonight went okay for you, whatever you ended up doing. XOXOXO

So, just an update... it went really well. I had a brief moment of "ugh" but it passed and I was able to enjoy the evening. As I was leaving, I hugged my SIL and told her again how much I appreciated her giving me a head's up. It went well though! My mom got to cut into the cake and was so excited! She forgot to flop the piece down so by the time she stopped with the "OH YAY!! CONGRATULATIONS!!! This is great!!" my dad was all "DUDE, Flop the piece over so I can see what it is!!" It was funny. It's still super top secret so in the RARE chance that someone who knows them is on here.. I'm very sorry.. please act surprised and dont' you DARE tell them you already know...but...
Let's just say, it has a kickstand...
