Recommend our next vacation...

We're looking for a short warm-ish vacation for February.  We found some great deals for Vegas, but the return flights were a major deterrent (like 2 4-hour stop overs on a red-eye flight).  We don't want to spend a fortune, so I'm looking for suggestions in the eastern US. We've been to Orlando.  NYC, Boston and D.C. are high on our "return to" list, but not in February. Chicago is on the list too, but also not in February :)

We'd like somewhere warm (ie: no snow), but not really hot.  We're not interested in all-inclusives or beaches. We love to try great restaurants, wander through interesting cities/neighborhoods. We love history. We're not really into a lot of museums/art galleries.

Any suggestions?

  • What about Florida Keys? I've never been, but I've heard it's quite nice there....and warm ;)
  • The flight would be long but you can get killer deals on Mexico right now. Maybe Cancun?

I vote New Orleans too. Or Austin, TX for great food and music. You can do Austin and San Antonio together. Not East coast, but warmer than most :). St Augustine FL would be good too.

This is exactly what I was going to recommend! My friend has gone, and it's an amazing city. Rich history, great restaurants, all sorts of beautiful architecture and old buildings to ogle. GA in Feb is pretty mild!

ETA: New Orleans is also a great option. I've been a few times, and I love it. Tour the Garden District (most amazing, beautiful houses ever) and chow down in the French Quarter, including stuffing yourself with delicious beignets and coffee!

Also, Feb is a great time to be in New Orleans, because Mardi Gras!!

On the flip side, Feb is a terrible time to be in NO, because of Mardi Gras.  :)  It was fun when I was in my 20s and we went many times, but the last few times I went when I was older, it wasn't fun.  And hotels were hard to get.  Just food for thought :)

I haven't been there for Mardi Gras, but I'm inclined to think this too. I'm all "get off my lawn" though, so take it with a grain of salt. I assume it would be pricey if you go at Mardi Gras, too.

I'm very much in the "get off my lawn" camp too.  I don't want to be anywhere near Mardi Gras.

Mardi Gras is March 4th this year and we're thinking about going for a few days surrounding my birthday (Feb. 25th).  Is that too close to Mardi Gras?  The searches I've been doing on expedia show much lower prices for that time, which makes me think perhaps it might be an okay time to go.

Actually, I just looked and it would be even cheaper to go the week leading up to Valentines.  Perhaps that would be better.

Sounds perfect!  Have you ever been?  It is so much fun! SO MUCH FUN.  And the history.  Gah!  I am very excited for you.

Bed and breakfasts are really fun there. The hotels can be nice too, but if you can score a B&B I say go for it if you are looking for romance and a little adventure.  There are a lot of 'haunted' mansions just waiting for you to spend the night.
