I may be the odd one, and I literally just finished reading 5 minutes ago, but I think I loved this. The ending is raw and hard, just like real war and life.

I loved the science stuff and the growth both Tris and Four went through.

    You're not. I'm with you!

  • I am glad I am not the only one that struggled with the different POVs. I was always thinking it was Tris since that is what we are used to. So confusing.

I must have misunderstood the part with Amar and Four. I thought Amar was saying he was together with George or something. oh well.

I was surprised that we never really find out what happens with the people on the compound after the memory serum.

I don't want to spoil any other series but the whole Marcus just leaving reminds me of another book series. I don't get why they think it's believable for someone so involved to just leave. No on buys it.

  • I enjoyed it. Not as much as Divergent but probably just as much as Insurgent.

I thought for sure I had it figured out. I thought Tobias would be the one to die by sacrificing his life for Caleb out of his love for Tris.

I am not one who needs a happy ending so I had no problem that she killed off Tris.

I agree with everyone who says there were way too many characters though.

I liked the dual perspectives, but she didn't do the best job giving each of them their own voice, so I had a hard time remembering whose POV I was in.

I missed Four. Tobias just isn't the same.
    It was so distracting!

  • So I finished it late last night. I'm not sure what I think about it yet.

I knew either Tris or Tobias was going to die, I just had a feeling about it. I figured out it was Tris once Tobias told her Caleb volunteered to show his love for her. I just knew she was going to go into the Weapons Lab instead of him and die either from the death serum or some other way.
I'm not a big fan of the end. I feel like there was still so many unanswered questions.

I didn't really like the switching view points, but obviously it was necessary or the book would have ended once Tris died, if had all been told from her POV.

  • I binge read until 3am last night and finally finished.

This book was all over the place. The first 20% didn't feel true to the spirit of the series for me. The characters barely resembled the Tris and Four in the previous books and the alternating POV annoyed me since their voices weren't very distinct. Several times I would get halfway through a chapter thinking I was in Tris's POV and it turned out I was in Tobias's. And what was with the light witty banter when they went on their date in Millenium Park? T&T are not witty banter people. I also never thought I would say this, but there was too much random kissing that didn't move the story forward.

The middle picked up though and I agreed with @jen748. I liked hearing about the genetic experiments. At one point I thought the whole Bureau might be another experiment within an experiment. But even with that, I felt like I was pressing on and reading so fast not because I was so into the story that I couldn't put it down, but because I wanted to finish and discuss.

The last 25% wowed me though. I ugly cried in several parts especially when I knew the decision Tris would make. Her final scenes with Four and with Cristina and with Caleb really brought me back to what I loved about these characters in the first book. As much as I hated that Tris had to die, I get it. I loved the moment when I realized the decision she would make and thinking *of course* she'll sacrifice herself. Selfless and brave. How else could it end?

And the scene towards the end where Tobias is remembering her and thinking "The Stiff jumped first" - I just lost it there.

I agree that the memory reset would have had more widespread complications: wouldn't the government just tell them what really happened? Isn't David working for superiors? But even with those questions lingering I liked the ending.

  • I haven't been in here in forever but had to come see what everyone was saying about the book! I agree with the overall consensus here with everything. I just saw this video where she explains everything and wanted to share :) hope it hasn't been posted yet!

    3) What was the point of Peter?  He was so fearsome in Divergent.  He lost that in Insurgent.  He was completely pointless in Allegiant.  Why did she keep him around as a character?  He basically sat on his bed and read books until the end.  Then he all of a sudden wants to insert himself into the action?

IMO Peter was there as a counterpoint to Four. He was like Voldemort to Four's Harry Potter. They were both genetically damaged, but the choices that they made and their actions, not their genetic predisposition, determined the kind of people they became.
