NBR: Regional Food

Re: NBR: Regional Food

  • I'm in Indy. I think our regional food thing is the breaded/fried pork tenderloin sandwich. DH loves them. We deep fry just about anything. Pretty sure you can still get deep friend candy bars at the state fair. I think that food station needs to be near one of the free health scan pavillions.

  • There is nothing better than NH maple syrup.  If it weren't so damn expensive, I would drink it straight from the bottle.
I bet Ontario maple syrup would give it a run for it's money   ;)

@brie&drew I didn't know you were in Indy!  We could have hung out while I was there!

Another Indy thing is the shrimp cocktail at St. Elmo's.

  • When I was in LA, I would say Mexican food and sushi were amazing.  I miss amazing sushi.

HOWEVER, I feel like seafood in general is better in the Northeast where I currently live. Lobster here is the best.

@MrsJenE  My dad used to work on a charter fishing boat out of York Harbor, Maine every weekend when I was a kid and we at lobster just about every single day.  He would come home every sunday night with at least 50 lobsters every week.  I miss those days.

@packfan20 I always think of the State Farm commercials with Aaron Rodgers in "Grill Class" LOL

    Daaahble check!

Agreed on the Chicago style pizza- Lou Malnati's or Giordanos is where it's at. That said, I also like our thin crust pizzas.

You have no idea how much I miss good Mexican food. When I say this in Boston, the response is, "Have you tried Chipotle???"

    Dude. Just no.

I have family in VT that send me some every year at Christmas and I hoard that shit like nobody's business.

  • I'm from upstate SC. So I'd send you to Charleston haha.

No seriously it's all about the southern comfort foods. Real fried chicken (NOT KFC) or fried pork chops, chicken and dumplings (better known as chicken n' dumplin's), real BBQ from a smoker or something, fried green tomatoes (I hate them buuut everyone here eats them), etc.

    Anything southern style honestly lol.

  • Now I live in Northern VA, where I don't really feel like we have a unique food.  We're kind of a mish of everything, because everyone is from somewhere else.  We DO have some amazing places to eat, but maybe not a unique food culture.

I grew up in Decatur, IL, where everyone eats cheese toasties, Krekles burgers (like Steak'n'Shake but more awesomer because they have a chicken car), and Monical's pizza (really thin crust pizza that you dip in French dressing).

  • NE Ohio, and the Hot Dog Shoppe in Warren, Ohio, is the stuff.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9XtdkAOl4A Even DH requests that place when we go visit my folks, and he's from GA.

  • Suburb of Cleveland. Pierogies - and not the frozen Mrs. T's.  With butter, sauteed onions and sour cream.  Mmmm.

Not that they are exclusive to Cleveland. But I learned recently that they are regional.
Yes!  DH is from a suburb of Cleveland too and I had never had pierogies until we visited his family for the first time.  Soooooooo good!  I've tried to make them here with Mrs. T's or other brands, but they are just nowhere near as good.  MIL makes them every time we visit.

I'm in LA and I would have to say Mexican food.  You just can't get anything nearly as good anywhere else.  Mexican food and In 'n Out were the foods I missed most when I lived elsewhere.

  • I'm also from Indiana. I finally learned how to make my own breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches here at home.

    Have you all seen this?

As for Norway, I would pick either smoked salmon (I've seen Norwegians eat smoked salmon for three meals in one day) or reindeer with lingonberries. If you're more adventurous, try the brown cheese. Or whale.

We moved from SC about a year ago. I miss the grits, especially cheese grits. If you can even find them on a menu up here, don't get them. They are disgusting. I make them at home on Sundays.

  • CT- Steamed cheeseburgers. Guy Fieri even came and had them on Diners Drive-ins and Dives.

The area I live in also has amazing Polish and Italian food... Paczki and hot Italian grinders. Mmmmm There are also a TON of apple orchards, so have an apple for dessert :)

I am from Indiana, too! I also recommend the pork, really any kind, but my favorites are biscuits and sausage gravy and bacon... yum!

I haven't had NH maple syrup, but the local sugar house syrup in CT is quite good.

  • I'm in Lancaster County PA so you'll be eating some good old dutch cooking Amish style. Chicken and corn soup followed by chicken and waffles with gravy and corn nuggets? We will pickle anything, have you ever tried chow chow? Or perhaps a big giant buffet with 8 types of meat and 37 starches because that's what all the touristy restaurants offer down here. I do enjoy some shoofly pie and Wilbur Buds for desert.

Have you been to Lititz yet? That's where they come from. Like Hershey Kisses but SO much better. I've switched to using wilbur chocolate for all my baking.

Ah, that is correct! We went to Giordanos and I'm sorry to say that I was not a fan! I was impressed by the look of it though - I've never seen a pizza so thick! It was definitely a fun experience regardless!
