After reading through that thread It made me think how fortunate I am to be 41 years old and still have my maternal grandmother still be alive. I am grateful for her every day.
( My grandmother (the nice one we lived with growing up) died when I was 16. I've lived without her for longer than I lived with her and I still miss her every single day. She was the only one who never made me feel like I didn't belong in my family.
That's awesome, Booney. It'll be a year in December since I lost one of my Grandmothers and 10 years in December that I lost the other. I still miss them both terribly. They were integral parts in making me the creative and passionate person I am.
My maternal grandma lived with my family from the time my parents got married. She stayed home with me and my sister while my parents worked. She spoke very little English, so that's how I became fluent in Portuguese. She adored us and we adored her. We were her favorite grandchildren because she practically raised us. She passed away 4 years ago.
I have both of my grandmothers and I'm so thankful for them. Even though my maternal grandmother is feisty and mean and a total pain in the ass, she's MY pain in the ass and I love her to pieces. Her memory has started to go and she's been sick lately, in and out of the hospital, and it's been SO sad and hard on my family.
I am in my mid twenties and have no grandparents left. 3 died before I entered high school. There are many times I am envious of my friends (and H) who still have their grandparents. I wish I knew my grandfathers I have a token memory of each that is it.
I had a good boo hoo this morning because of my best friend's grandfather's is dying and my heart is breaking for her. It reminded me how much I miss my gram, she's been gone 12 years and I miss her every single day. What I wouldn't give to get a big huge from her and talk to her one last time for 5 minutes. My husband has one grandmother still alive and it's great to have a relationship with her, I get to buy her books all the time, but it's just not the same as having your own gram.
My paternal grandparents died before my parents even met (I have no idea how they died TBH), my maternal grandfather passed away when I was 10, and my maternal grandmother when I was 17 or 18.
Booney I am so glad for you!! I have my maternal grandmother still. I love the crazy old lady. I miss my other grandmother everyday and she died in 2008. MH last grandparent (maternal gma) passed away a month ago and I know he feels a little lost without her. It breaks my heart.
My paternal grandmother is the only grandparent I have left. She is definitely fiesty. She's 96 years old and lives at home by herself. She just gave up driving last year. She has a goal to live to 100 years old. I believe her mother lived that long.
That's awesome Booney! I only have one grandmother and she's 91 and has Alzheimer's.
Both off my parents were the youngest, my dad the youngest of seven, spread over 25 years. My paternal grandfather would be 133 so...yeah...

I am also lucky enough to have a great-aunt who is a very spirited 100 years old. She is a firecracker. She is the oldest of 9 children (my grandfather was the youngest and he passed away at the age of 39). She was always like a grandmother to us because she practically raised my mother (mom was an orphan).
Unfortunately both my mom's parents died before she was 16 (she was an infant when her father died) and my paternal grandfather also died when my Dad was young (8 or 9 I believe). His mother did live until I was 5 or 6 so I do have some vague memories of her.
I am definitely jealous of my husband who didn't lose his first grandparent 'till he 20 and who still has one grandma alive (doing well at 95!).
I'm very hopeful that when we have children they will get to have the bond with their grandparents that I never did, and I am so excited for that aspect of their lives!
This is going to sound awful, but the only grandparent left between me and H is his maternal grandma. She's in her nineties, but she's not the sweet and motherly type. She's a total schemer. I have to watch everything I say in front of her for fear that she'll twist it around and tell the rest of the family rumors about us.
I really miss maternal grandmother. She died when I was 14 and she and I were extremely close. The rest of my grandparents I was really distant from so hers is the presence that I miss the most.
My maternal grandmother died before I was born, so I've always been really sad that I never got to know her. People have told me wonderful stories about her all my life, though. My parents planned to stop having kids after my brothers, so I was a surprise baby! My mom always says it was a huge blessing to have a girl and get to have the mother-daughter bond which she was missing so much.
My paternal grandmother is still alive, but she isn't very involved in our lives. We see her once or twice a year probably. I'm still thankful for her though!
My paternal grandfather died a week before my wedding but I still have all other grandparents. My maternal grandmother is not doing well, though.
DH never knew his paternal grandparents and lost his maternal grandfather 5 months before the wedding. His grandma is now remarried and doing well, though.
I love my grandparents. All of them, so so much. They are all still living. But I don't know how I'll ever handle it when my paternal grandmother dies. I can't even think about it.
