Just for fun - how do you feel about Black Friday?

I'll admit - it's pretty much my favorite day of the year.  I develop a "strategic plan of attack" (as my H calls it) and then I hit the ground running to get the best deals possible.

It did sort of bother me when they started opening stores on Thanksgiving... but apparently it didn't bother me enough to keep me from going last year.

H and I have never actually celebrated Thanksgiving together, because we always went to our own families when we were unmarried.  This is the first year we are celebrating together.  We are going to be at his parents' house.  His mother has already mentioned how much she hates Black Friday... so I guess I'll just sneak out?  Because seriously, she's not stopping me!

Re: Just for fun - how do you feel about Black Friday?

  • I stay away from stores on Black Friday, and refuse to shop on Thanksgiving Day.

Maybe if my list of people to buy for was longer I would feel different?

  • I stay away.
Actually, I find better deals in December.

  • I think its wrong they have started it on Thanksgiving.  People should be spending time with family.  When I met DH his mother was one of those crazies that gets up at 3am for it and I didn't participate in it the first year we dated.  I really think last year was the first time I actually bought stuff on Black Friday because we have DD now.  I look at all the ads on Thanksgiving and mark things I want to buy, but I don't get out shopping until about 10:30am on Black Friday.  Most the crowds are gone.  I hate crowds and they make me nervous.  I never enjoy shopping when there are that many people out.  I think its because I stay home with DD now and so I can shop during the week when everyone is at work.  I don't even like to run errands on the weekend.

  • What's interesting is I've never actually gone Christmas shopping - it's the day of the year I buy all the home items I think I'm going to need for the next year.

Yeah the shopping on Thanksgiving day was sort of strange last year - but on the other hand, we were all just sitting on the couch in a turkey coma, and that's why we decided to go.  I got a shark steam mop for like $35.  It was glorious, and I use that thing all the time.

  • I buy more for myself on Black Friday than I do for any actual Christmas presents. But I wait until around 6-7am to head out.  That way all the crazy people are done, but I still get most of the early deals.

Although I've started to browse through the ads early on blackfriday.com.  Then I make a list for my mom and the IL's on things I want that I wouldn't buy for myself.  That way they get them at a much more reasonable price, and I don't have to pay for them.  I've done this for 2 years now, and they absolutely love it.  Even my grandma got me a jacket for $35 that I love, and she was able to get me a few other items too and stay in her $50 budget but get things I wanted that wasn't gift cards.

  • Oh man - Target's ad just came out.  They are selling  the ipad air for $480 - and they throw in a $100 Target gift card on top of it.

Oh man, and a dyson vacuum for $259.  Be still my heart!

And of course, they still give you 5% off with the RedCard.

OK, maybe I spend too much money on Black Friday?

  • I love Black Friday ! My BFF and I usually go around 5 or 6 am, after the first rush but before the late sleepers. The deals are great! I am not supportive of stores opening on TG, though. My state doesn't allow it anyway, but nationwide I hope it's a trend that goes away. This year we'll be in FL visiting H's dad, so I'll probably have to skip it. December is one of my three paycheck months this year, so I've pushed my gift shopping later than usual anyway.
  • I've gone out a few times, mostly for the good-but-not-so-good-I-have-to-set-an-alarm deals. Shopping is stressful enough without the casualties...

  • Neither MW or I go out.  As a matter of fact, MW usually does most of her Christmas shopping online.

It helps with us that we usually just exchange gifts with her family and our friends two children.  For most of the gifts that we give we have a $25 limit.  The bad thing is that my MIL and SIL both have birthdays in late December/ early January that goes into our Christmas budget.  We try to stick to less than $400 for all Christmas gifts.

My family has decided that it was best not to trade gifts since my brother and I are still paying off student loans etc and my parents are retired plus we tend to buy ourselves what we need.  We will get my niece something until she turns 18 but she lives in North Carolina with my Sister.

As for shopping for the home, I tend to buy the really good quality items so I don't have to buy them again.  This goes for my cookware (West Bend) and knives (Cutco and others that are high quality and some I have had for 20 years).

maybe, but if its really the only day you go out to shop for house items it's really not that bad.  If you don't have the dyson you should really get it.  There is no other vacuum like it.   We got it for our wedding from FIL and I've been in love with it since.  That's a great price on it too!

My big splurge this year will be a bigger coach purse.  I'm waiting for the right deal.  Now if coach has black friday deals I'm there!!
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • The coach outlet near me does, @vlagrl29! But, they only let in a few people at a time, so the line can be literally hours long unless you get there TG afternoon (for a midnight opening).
  • While I understand the allure of a good deal, an entire day (or more) basically dedicated to consumerism doesn't sit well with me.  Especially when it's so close to a day that is supposed to be dedicated to being thankful for what you already have.  As you can probably tell, I'm more into Buy Nothing Day then Black Friday.
  • @xstatic3333 Do you live in MA?

I love black friday shopping. I've been doing it since I was 7 months pregnant with my DD, about 4 years ago. I plan out all my shopping ahead of time, and DH pushes the carriage. Because of the blue laws, none of the stores can open until 1AM on Black Friday. DH and I usually leave around 11pm, go grab some coffee and something to snack on and we will wait in line. We usually hop around from one store to another. We are going from Toys R Us to Target (they have a Keurig deal with a $20 gift card) to Walmart. It's just a fun time for me and H.

I don't have any outlet coach stores near me.  The closest one is in Eureka Springs, MO which is a bit of a drive for me. I know the exact purse I want from them too.  If nothing else I will use a 25% off coupon they have when it gets closer to xmas.

  • If I do any black friday shopping, it's online. Otherwise, I avoid stores from black Friday until after Christmas. I have crowds and I hate traffic.
  • Just curious, which stores will be open on Thanksgiving?  I think I heard Macy's, Kmart, and Best Buy?   I feel bad for the people that have to go into work, instead of spending time with their families.

  • Yes, @smbenevides1989! The blue laws are a pain in many ways but I support them for Black Friday.

    This is me too.

I absolutely will never shop on Thanksgiving on principle. Is there nothing anymore that cannot be taken over by needing the latest electronic? It symbolizes everything that is wrong with consumerism in this country. I won't rant too long, but seriously? Take over one of the few days set aside for people to gather for the sake of togetherness and gratitude and instead spend it shopping? And make minimum wage workers come in rather than spend time with their families? Never. I get that many people use the day to actually save money on things they do need, but many use the "deals" to excuse overspending.I hate that Christmas is all about presents, and I hate that people feel pressure to spend more than they can afford for the holiday. Again, I know this is not everyone, and probably not  most on this board, but it's a lot of people.

Not to mention the lines and traffic. I'll do my shopping online. Just not on thanksgiving.

yes macy's, best buy, staples open at 8pm that night.  Kmart opens at 6am on Thanksgiving!!!  I won't shop there because they shouldn't be making their employees work that entire day.  It's just so wrong on so many levels.  Kmart has cheaply made stuff anyways.  I already started xmas shopping last week.  I like to get most of my shopping out of the way by black friday.  my goal is to have it all done by the end of the first week of december so I can enjoy the holidays for what they are.

  • To me it is disgusting that stores open on Thanksgiving for Black Friday sales.....It should be a day of giving thanks for all that we have, and being with family and relaxing (I am sorry, but it is corporate GREED that destroys the concept of Thanksgiving).

Companies should give their employees a day to actually enjoy their day with their families and not have to worry about going into work that day......IF a company wants to be open on Thanksgiving the the owners/CEO's/all BIG wigs should work that day too....see how they like it.....I HATE BLACK FRIDAY SHOPPING! I have once and NEVER EVER WILL I AGAIN!!!!!!

Stepping off of my soap box.

Yeah Wrentham is a definite no-go! But last year I hit Natick around 5 am and it was surprisingly sane. I'd do that again.
  • My biggest pet peeve about Thanksgiving is football.  I don't remember when that became a thing, but it drives me crazy.  Then again, I live in Alabama.  So football is like something sacred down here, and I can't escape it. Don't get me wrong, I like a good game now and then, and I'll always go to a few tailgates every year.  But by the time Thanksgiving rolls around I really couldn't care less about it.

Too much football and too much family time gives me cabin fever.  It's like, I have to get out.  H's family apparently has a traditional multi-hour pinochle tournament after dinner every Thanksgiving.  While watching football.  I might do something drastic.

    *gasp* You take that back!
  • Afraid I can't - I'm the artsy fartsy type: ballet, art museums, theater, and symphonies all sit pretty well with me.

With football I watch grown men run into each other and often wonder what is the point and how does it contribute to the progression of the human spirit?

But, I know I'm in the minority on that one :)

Again, living in Alabama doesn't help matters.  Parents here raise their children to go to college simply because of a football team, rather than because of the academic programs they offer.  And then they wonder why it takes their children 7 years to graduate.
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • And this probably says too much about me, but whatever - I went to an SEC school that is... small.  It has more graduate students than undergraduates.  And it's quite academic.  If you know about the SEC, there's only one school that fits that description.

So I am pretty biased, I admit.  And I never have any idea who AL is playing, much to the consternation of many of the folks in my office.

  • I love football-but, I hate when the Pats play on TG. When we're at H's mom's house she won't let me watch the game, she'll always try to pull me into the kitchen to chat about "girl stuff" with her instead.

The AL football scene does sound beyond intense. I can see how you'd need a break sometimes!
