Audiobooks

I'm not a huge audio book person but I have been using them on road trips. However since I have to start working out, I can't read an actual book while bouncing on an elliptical. I've been fortunate to find some audio books that have great narrators and kept my ADD at bay. Also I've noticed that some books are better read than listened to but once I'm turned off by the audio, I can't pick up the book.  Which books do you guys think have great narrators?

P.S. I'm currently in a food coma so I'm not sure if this even makes any sense.  If it doesn't, forgive me.

  • Memoirs of a Geisha is very well done. I liked the narrator for the Mercy Thompson series. Anything read by Neil Gaiman is spectacular, Neverwhere especially so.

For YA, I loved the narrator for the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini, but the story was hit or miss at times. I enjoyed listening to His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. It starts with The Golden Compass and is a full cast.

  • LOL .... Stephen Weber does an awesome job on IT. Rosalyn Landor is another favorite reader of mine. She does The Winter Sea but I think she mostly sticks to historical fiction. Davina Porter is also good. She's part of an ensemble cast for Innocent Traitor.

I borrowed IT from my library and I don't know what I did wrong but it isn't playing and doesn't have a return button.  I'm waiting for the time to expire and just renew it.

  • I wish I could lend from my audible account.

  • I will concur that Stephen Webber did an AMAZING job narrating it. When he stutters for Stuttering Bill- it is awkward. Which means it was well done!

  • Ready Player One!!! Wil Wheaton!!!

Rob Lowe's book is pretty fabulous, too. He narrates himself.

  • I really liked Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple.
The Hunger Games Trilogy is good on audiobook, maybe you want a reread before the Catching Fire movie comes out?
I agree with pp that Ken Follett's Fall of Giants was great on audio. I'm listening to Winter of the World now and it's just as good.
Chelsea Handler narrates herself which is pretty entertaining imo. Same for Bossypants and Tina Fey.

  • Liesl and Po by Lauren Oliver is (i believe) the same narrator as the one for the HP books and it was pretty cute.
I also liked Practical Demonkeeping by Christopher Moore on audio
Memoirs are usually not bad on audio because they're usually told by the author in their voice.
(also second Eleanor & Park, Nick & Norah)

  • Oh yes- Christopher Moore's A Dirty Job was one of my first audiobooks. Quality. Bloodsucking Fiends was good too. I think I also listened to Fool as well. He reminds me of Neil Gaiman though, so take that as you will.
