Re: Catching Fire Movie. OMFG. (SP)

  • I thought it was well done. JLaw remains a perfect Katniss. Elizabeth Banks is a phenomenal Effie. After two movies, I'm so glad they casted it as they did.

But MAN, that movie was brutal. And I knew what was going to happen. I hid in my hoodie for a good part of the film. :( I have all the sads.

  • I freakin' LOVED it. They really did a wonderful job! And I may have actually liked the movies JUST as much as the book, if not a little more. Finick didn't look the part, but he actually really pulled off the character. The rest of the casting was amazing. And the costumes?! I seriously swooned. Jennifer Lawrence is THE perfect Katniss, and Effie won me over.

I was on the edge of my seat for half the movie, even though I knew what was going to happen, so that's a feat. Two thumbs way up!
  • Way better than the first movie. My only issue is that I felt like they spent too much time leading up to the games and not enough time in the arena. I wanted more time with Johanna and Finnick. But really really really well done!

  • It was SO good.  When Peeta mentions the baby on stage with Cesar, DH leaned over and said "WHAT?! Is that in the book too?" I told him yes and he clapped and said "Go Peeta!"  It was awesome.  He knew most of what happens since he asked for the rundown but everyone I went with loved it too even those that hadn't seen it.
Finnick didn't convince me until he opened his mouth.  He's the perfect Finnick after watching the movie.  I wanted to see more of Mags and Johanna but I think they were both cast so perfectly.
Oh and Elizabeth Banks as Effie?  So amazing.  She brings that character to life and there were moments I wanted to cry.
It was one of the best book to movie adaptations I think I've ever seen.  I kind of want to go see it again.

  • Was I the only one who was emotional through the whole movie?  I started crying when Rue's picture was up and her family was standing there in District 11.  I cried when Snow announced the Quarter Quell.  I cried when Cinna was beaten and taken away.

I honestly think that I have finally found a movie that is as good as the book!  And I am pissed that I have to wait a year for the next one!

You are not alone. I cried quite a few times. When Rue's family was standing there I just bawled.

  • I loved it so, so much!  I can't wait to see it again.  The casting choices were spot on.  Jennifer Lawrence continues to be amazing.  Everyone was fantastic.  And the sets were incredible!!!
I cried so much!!  Even Effie made me cry.
  • I just thought of something else.  I loved that they gave Effie another mahogany quote!

I absolutely LOVED it!  I thought they did a great job with casting, and I just love Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutchinson, and Liam Hemsworth!  And the costumes were amazing!!  I'm going to see it again next week!

A few things that I did notice that they took out (maybe because I just finished my re-read last week):
At the ball prior to the games when Katniss is dancing with Plutarch Heavensbee, in the book she admires his watch, which she then ties as a hint to the arena at the end, and that wasn't in the movie.
Also, the people in the woods that were hiding out in the cabin on their way to District 13 weren't in the movie.

  • I thought it was amazing!! It was so true to the book, the arena and the cast were just as I pictured them. Better than the first one I think!

Yeah, I was waiting for that part and was a little bummed they cut it.

Otherwise I LOVED it! I hope I get the chance to see it again while its still in theaters. I cannot wait for the next one.

  • It was EXCELLENT. The casting was perfect. They couldn't have picked nether people.

JLaw remains my favorite. She is amazing. She truly IS Katness. The mannerisms, facial expressions, etc. She is phenomenal.

I loved that you can see Prim maturing and transforming in this one, becoming confident and more sure of herself.

Josh H did amazing as Peeta. I was so iffy about that casting choice but he's done so much better than I thought. He was shining in this one for sure.

This was my favorite of the three books.
  • I am still shocked at how amazing it was.

I have never, ever, ever been this thrilled with a movie adaptation. They really outdid themselves. The acting, the effects, the costumes, EVERYTHING. Perfection. PER-fection.

I cried through so much of the movie. My emotions were completely out of control. I was laughing and weeping in the same breath much of the time, which, just... wow. I saw it with @hoycie and we kept commenting on how spectacular the casting is. She even reminded me how much we hated that they cast Woody Harrelson as Haymitch and now I can't see him as anything else. Totally eating my words. I'm so glad that it lived up to my expectations.

  • I definitely enjoyed it. I laughed at several scenes - Tucci's Caesar is incredible and steals every scene he's in, Johanna stripping down in the elevator, Katniss waking Haymitch 'then you should have asked Peeta.'  Great stuff. They completely set up pregnant me to cry with the District 11 speech.

My only complaint of the movie was that several scenes were spent showing the distance between Katniss and Peeta, to show Peeta's hurt, to show Katniss basically choosing Gale. I thought much less was done to bring Katniss and Peeta back together emotionally - they re-established friendship but not love/more than friends. In the book, the scene on the beach resonates romantically. You can feel Katniss' heart make a definite shift. In the movie, it felt less, almost flat or situational only. In the MJ movie, I'm concerned that the reunion moment is going to also fall flat; whereas, in the book, her happiness at seeing Peeta again is palpable. We'll see...

I loved this movie so much. I EVEN CRIED! I haven't cried so much in a movie since Marley and Me. Once the movie ended, I wanted to watch it all over again.  I may go this weekend again even if it's by myself!

The only thing I wish were different was the time spent in the arena.  I would love to see more of it and would totally sit through 4 hour movie if I needed to.  @elistar we should go again!!

  • I loved every minute of it. My kid cried through the whole thing!

I think the reason they didn't show Plutarch's watch is they were hinting that the mockingjay was a sign of rebellion. It would have let the cat out of the bag way too soon that Plutarch was in on things.  I like how they played that out. It was a nice surprise at the end for those who didn't read the book.

Best facial expression ever = JL's face as Johanna gets naked int he elevator. LOVE THAT SCENE!

  • I went and saw it again over the weekend. Even better the second time. I was so emotionally spent  the first time I saw it, it was nice to see it again and notice the things I missed in my teary haze.

I'm not sure I've ever been so perfectly happy with the casting and the performance of an actor. I mean COME ON. She's perfect perfect perfect and so so so good at being Katniss.

I think this is a great defense of that choice.  I, too, was a little upset to not see the watch because I love that scene so much but in the book you have so many pages between knowing what side Plutarch is on but the movie there's only so much time and the thrill of it at the end is important for those that haven't read the books.

Can I just say Philip Seymore Hoffman is an AMAZING Plutarch.  So excited for Mockingjay.

I thought about it last night, but ultimately decided against it. The dance scene and some of the scenes in the arena would probably just make me sick. (I'm prone to motion sickness, though.)

  • I saw it on Friday night and thought it was amazing.  I absolutely loved it and have to agree with OP's that it is by far the absolute best book adaptation I have seen.  The casting was spot on and all the actors did an amazing job.  I can't say enough good things about this film.  I want to go see it again in the theater and I never do that.

LOVED IT!! So much. I went with dh who has not read the books. He was emotionally drained after. lol.

    Very happy with it.

The "catching fire" pin changing into "mockingjay" at the very end.... chills!!

  • I thought of another difference from the book that I actually like better in the film:

In the book, the twists for the Quarter Quells were already set up at the time of the charter, so Pres. Snow just opens the envelope and reads that the tributes will be reaped from the victors. That always struck me as a Dickens-like outlandish coincidence.

In the film, they imply that Snow (and Heavensbee) devised it as a reaction to the victors having too much power (and for Heavensbee, a way to build even more support for a Katniss-based revolution).

I thought this was a much more elegant plot development compared to the book's "Hey! Twist of fate! By terrible odds (which are never in your favor), you're going right back in! (What do you expect from a sequel?!)"

The way they did it in the movie is the way I interpreted it in the books. I think it was implied that no one in their right mind would believe that this was just an "outlandish coincidence". Snow is not above using any tools necessary to keep the districts in line, including faking the quarter quell.
