Re: Turkey Day GTKY

  • 1) What is your favorite family tradition?
-We always woke up and watched the thanksgiving parade while my parents made a good breakfast. :)

    2) Will you be traveling? If so, far?
-Both sets of parents live about 45 minutes away from us, and only 5 minutes from each other. Makes holidays a lot more convenient.

    3) Cranberry Sauce - Jelly, Whole Cranberry or Homemade?
-Jellied, and it's one of my favorite foods for thanksgiving.

    4) Pumpkin or Apple?
-Apple, although I always have chocolate pie for thanksgiving.

    5) Odd plans?
-Not really odd, going to DHs parents in the morning, then having dinner at my parents.

    6) Anything else??
    -Nope

  • 1) just the entire extended family getting together.
    2) only heading to SIL's house 1.5 hours away
    3) gross
    4) apple
    5) Friday after thanksgiving we're going to a condo for the weekend and taking a ride on the Polar Express.
    6) I'm not looking forward to hanging out with the ILs all weekend.

  • 1) What is your favorite family tradition? When I was a kid we would get up really early to go downtown and watch the start of a race that ran through town after it started we'd go home and then go back in an hour or so to watch them run back. We'd drink hot chocolate and cheer on the runners. I loved it, my parents hated it... they were so cold!
    2) Will you be traveling? If so, far? This year I won't be, but DH is. He'll be heading to Jersey (about 2 hours from us) to be in a parade.
    3) Cranberry Sauce - Jelly, Whole Cranberry or Homemade? Jelly. It has to be jelly, unless it's homemade. I rarely make homemade though, I'm usually the only one that eats it.
    4) Pumpkin or Apple? I want all the pie.
    5) Odd plans? DH will be in NYC to be a clown in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. His late uncle was one of the main organizers for it and this is DH's last chance to be in the parade, so he's doing it with his sister in honor of his uncle. We're really hoping the storm coming Wednesday doesn't make travel too bad, he has to drive through the Poconos to get to the city.
Me? I'm cooking a chicken with all the fixings for my Dad and H when he gets home. Surprisingly, he should be home by 6pm, including stopping at his Grandmother's to visit with family. Why a Thanksgiving chicken? It's smaller than a turkey.
    6) Anything else?? I'm really looking forward to having most of the day to myself. Friday is going to be a long day... I'm going shopping in the morning, then heading to my SIL's in the Poconos for a big family dinner. I'm going to need Thursday to prepare.

  • @ashleymatt1215 That's a cool tradition, are you going to keep that tradition going with your kids or do something else?

@alexisanna44 That sounds like fun! Do you do it every year? Or just this year?

  • The polar express is just for this year. Should be a good time. I just can't handle MIL and her constant baby talk with Lucy and making me want to slap her every 5 minutes for something.

We'll probably do something else, we live about 40 minutes from my hometown where the race is and it starts at like 8 or 9 in the morning. I'm thinking something breakfast related will become the tradition for us, Matt loves to watch the parade so I'd feel bad making him drive to watch a running race in the cold! Perhaps homemade cinnamon rolls and the parade?

  • 1) What is your favorite family tradition? Watching the parade in the morning

    2) Will you be traveling? If so, far? Not really. We're going to DH's aunt's house, which is about an hour away.

    3) Cranberry Sauce - Jelly, Whole Cranberry or Homemade? Jelly all the way

    4) Pumpkin or Apple? Usually pumpkin, but I haven't been loving pumpkin in general this year (I blame being pregnant)

    5) Odd plans? Nothing too odd. I guess the oddest part is that the first course is always home made raviolis. Super delicious, but not quite traditional for thanksgiving.

    6) Anything else?? This is the first time in probably 15 years that I'm not baking something. I offered, but his aunt told me to take the year off since I'm largely pregnant :p

    2) Will you be traveling? If so, far? Nope, hosting DHs extended family this year.
    3) Cranberry Sauce - Jelly, Whole Cranberry or Homemade? Jelly, always.
    4) Pumpkin or Apple? Apple
    5) Odd plans? Nothing really except for the necessity of squeezing dinner in between DH sleeping from the night shift before, and leaving for the night shift again.
    6) Anything else?? Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

  • 1) What is your favorite family tradition? This is a tradition that didn't come in till I celebrated my first Thanksgiving with H's family 10 years ago.  But they serve up alcoholic slush each year, and it's so good.  I swear we start serving it earlier and earlier each year.

    2) Will you be traveling? If so, far? Not this year.

    3) Cranberry Sauce - Jelly, Whole Cranberry or Homemade? Mmmm homemade.

    4) Pumpkin or Apple? Pumpkin

    5) Odd plans? We host Friendsgiving each year.  One friend even skips out on his family Thanksgiving in order to come.

    4) Pumpkin or Apple? Both please.

    5) Odd plans? We typically serve sauerkraut and poppyseed cake with all the usual other thanksgiving trimmings. Got to sneak that Polish food in somehow at every holiday :)

  • 1) What is your favorite family tradition? It's the one time of year my ENTIRE family gets together (we're spread out all over the country). Sadly, my sister, BIL, and their two boys (in AZ) and my brother, SIL, and their three girls (in Long Island) can't make it this year. People are usually at the house from 3 days to a week, so we all work on a giant puzzle together.  Last year's was 1500 pieces I think.

    2) Will you be traveling? If so, far? Yes and yes!  My sister really wanted to host this year, so we're going to her house in VA. It's about a 10 hour ride.

    3) Cranberry Sauce - Jelly, Whole Cranberry or Homemade? Homemade! With mandarin oranges, cinnamon, and some other yummy stuff my mom puts in.

    4) Pumpkin or Apple? ALL the desserts!

    5) Odd plans? My whole family is odd. And I love them all.

    6) Anything else?? I'm sure I've said this at least a dozen times, but I can't wait to tell my parents the big news on Wednesday night!!!

  • 1) What is your favorite family tradition? - We don't have one for Thanksgiving yet. We always travel to Iowa for Christmas so we've done something different every year for Thanksgiving.

    2) Will you be traveling? If so, far? - Nope. MIL and FIL are coming to us this year! It will be at our house with just us, them and my mom.

    3) Cranberry Sauce - Jelly, Whole Cranberry or Homemade? Jellied for sure. We call it Canberries.

    4) Pumpkin or Apple? - Normally I would say pumpkin but when my MIL was here a few weeks ago she made a killer apple pie. I want that.

    5) Odd plans? - Well, it will be odd to have the holiday at our house since we usually do travel. We have had years that we didn't travel because of work and I usually made something odd like lasagna those years since a full spread for just the two of us would be a bit much.

    6) Anything else??

  • 1) What is your favorite family tradition?
We usually host Thanksgiving but not this year with me feeling like a stuffed turkey myself but we usually give our dog his own turkey leg to munch and I want to incorporate doing a craft with the kids. last year we made a turkey out of her feet and hands and it was so great to take it out this year and see how much she's grown.
2)Will you be traveling? If so, far?
    Nah. just 30 min.
    3) Cranberry Sauce - Jelly, Whole Cranberry or Homemade?
Jelly. MIL makes homemade but I prefer the one from the can.
    4) Pumpkin or Apple?
Pumpkin! only pie I like at all.
    5) Odd plans? Does DH wearing a turkey hat count?
    6) Anything else?? No. Nope. I will not be out shopping but I do like to drive by stores to see the lines. Ridic.-

  • 1) What is your favorite family tradition? I always cook dinner at my mom's. I used to be the helper and then at 16 I took over the majority and my mom is the helper. I always try one or two new recipes and one of them is always awful in some way haha! I can't wait to have Ava Nichol help...she will probably do some stirring and pouring this year! :)

    2) Will you be traveling? If so, far? Out to my parents which is about 25 minutes away but we go out there every weekend anyway. Then Friday we are going to DH's Dad's and then his Mom's. Everybody is local.

    3) Cranberry Sauce - Jelly, Whole Cranberry or Homemade? Jelly Ocean spray from a can and it must slurp on the way out and have the can ring lines in it!

    4) Pumpkin or Apple? Neither. We do chocolate cream pies

    5) Odd plans? We have DH's Dad's on Friday but we aren't getting along with that part of the family so we made plans to go to MIL's for leftovers and now we have a reason to leave early
    6) Anything else?? I love love love the holidays with my family and so does DH and DD but I am dreading the holidays with the in laws. The drama is ridiculous and I am just so sick of the passive aggressive bullshit and the guilt trips about not seeing them enough when they don't want to see us. Also, there will be so much drama with SIL and if her kids are there or not. They will say repeatedly in front of us that we can't do anything yet because the grandkids aren't here. They don't include our daughter in the term the grandchildren and even though I don't want to care it hurts and enrages me at the same time.

  • 1) What is your favorite family tradition? We don’t really have thanksgiving traditions.  Growing up everyone just went over to my grandparents and that’s what everyone still does!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

    2) Will you be traveling? If so, far? Staying home for Turkey day and we may go to upstate New York to visit some friends for the long weekend depending on the weather.

    3) Cranberry Sauce - Jelly, Whole Cranberry or Homemade? Neither. Yuck!

    4) Pumpkin or Apple? Pumpkin if I eat any. I’m not really a fan of pie

    5) Odd plans? nope

    6) Anything else?? I’m just excited to eat:) I already made my side dish and it’s in the freezer. I can’t wait to cook it up!!

  • 1) What is your favorite family tradition?
I love to sit in the kitchen with my mom while she cooks and watch the Macy's Day Parade (yes I say it too!)

    2) Will you be traveling? If so, far?
Nope. Having it at home this year.

    3) Cranberry Sauce - Jelly, Whole Cranberry or Homemade?
    Definitely Jelly.

    4) Pumpkin or Apple?
Neither, I'm not a fan of these pies, but if I must choose, I'll eat the crust of the apple pie.

    5) Odd plans?
Usually we switch holidays with my aunt (she does one holiday and my family does the other) but since she started working this year, she won't be home and has decided to do thanksgiving on Wednesday and eat when she gets home on Thanksgiving. It's not really a big deal since I get to sit in my pjs all day!

    6) Anything else??
I made a cinnamon roll cake yesterday that my family pretty much devoured. They asked me to make it for our dessert. Other than that, I'm pretty much going to sit and do nothing all afternoon and rest up to get ready to shop. DH and I usually leave around 11 pm to wait in line with coffees in hand. Big brand stores are not allowed to open their doors until 1:00 AM Black Friday because of the blue laws in MA. It's just something that we like to do together - plus I love the rush. Then it will be putting up the Christmas tree that evening while watching Christmas movies.

  • 1) What is your favorite family tradition? My mom always kept us home from school (we live in Canada) and let us watch the parade in our PJs. Last year we went to the Detroit parade. This year, I need to record it since I am going to work.
    2) Will you be traveling? If so, far? Just to my grandparents for dinner on Sunday. They are about 45 minutes away.
    3) Cranberry Sauce - Jelly, Whole Cranberry or Homemade? If I buy it, whole cranberry. My one aunt always made a yummy apple cranberry crisp. It's delicious and that's what I prefer.
    4) Pumpkin or Apple? Pumpkins
    5) Odd plans? Besides not having Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, not really.
    6) Anything else??

  • 1) What is your favorite family tradition?
We don't really have any, other than I alternate between Mom and Dad every year.  Thankfully, my ILs don't have family nearby, so they go wherever we are for the day.

    2) Will you be traveling? If so, far?
    Nope!  Hosting!

    3) Cranberry Sauce - Jelly, Whole Cranberry or Homemade?
Jelly.  Don't mess with my jelly.

    4) Pumpkin or Apple?
    PUMPKIN!!!

    5) Odd plans?
It's Thanksgivukkah!  I have Hanukkah napkin rings, dreidels, and gelt on my Thanksgiving table, and the meal is half Hanukkah half Thanksgiving.

    6) Anything else??
    I want latkes...
