Well I did it...

I put the ball in DH's court just now. I told him that since I am spotting, my temps are down, and I'm cramping, there is no hope left for this cycle. That makes us starting cycle 13 this week.
I told him we can do 1 of 2 things:
1) buy an at home semen test kit, which I know is NOT the best choice, but at least this test will tell him yes your sperm is good or the only other result means something is off and you need to see a doctor. At least this way he can see for himself and be at home and comfortable.
2) he can go to the doctor with me and we can discuss where to go from here and have the doctor tell him he needs a semen analysis.
I knew he wouldn't choose the doctor option but I threw it in there with high hopes. He has now agreed to do the at home test first. I'm glad he has at least agreed to some kind of test, even if it is not something that will give us specific laboratory results.
It's a step...
So that's my update!

T-TTC since Dec 2008. PCOS/nonexistant cycles(anovulation) and endo. HSG in '10 revealed both tubes blocked. Lap surgery in Dec '10 to correct. Failed Clomid/IUI and injectable(Bravelle)/IUI cycles so far.

  • Good luck moving forward. I am sorry you have to look in to further testing.

  • Cycle 13 is a crappy point to hit. That was harder for me than it was when I passed 1 year.

I'm glad YH at least conceded to the at-home test as a starting point. GL with it. I hope it shows good results.

  • Good luck, but I'm sorry you have to do this, hun. My friend had her DH do an at home test before the went to Dr as well (they were due to insurance reasons) - anywho, apparently a lot of the in home tests only do count, not motility or morph. There are a few that do all - they're a bit more expensive, but I'm assuming it's worth it to get a full idea?

    Good luck!

  • @xan921 - My gyno did the Cd3 hormone testing, and everything came back fine. I have gotten positive OPK readings on my digital OPK test so I know I ovulate. My gyno said they will not do any other tests on me until DH gets an SA done. I'm not very happy with that response so if I do end up going to a doctor I might go see an RE instead.

  • It's standard for docs to hold on further testing for you until YH gets the S/A done. His test is way less invasive than others for you can get, so if they can start by ruling him in/out, that makes sense to me for them to wait on testing you further.

You might try appealing to his financial side on this one. Our insurance covered DH's S/A 100% as part of our labwork benefit. If yours does the same, why shell out any money for a test to do at home that only provides a partial answer?

I ask myself this damn questions ALL THE TIME... I think he is terrified and isn't ready to face the music. I know it is hard for him to think about but at the same time it frustrates me beyond belief because I just want answers.

  • I agree with above pp. An RE is going to order a SA first as well. If he isn't ready to face the music then maybe you guys should sit down and have a heart to heart. DH's SA cost a ton less than $75 and he did it at a quest. He could have done it at home and taken it to quest but that made him more nervous. However, he never hesitated to do it. He wanted to move things along as much as I did and he didn't want me to go through an HSG if I didn't have to (I ended up having to). Just because your cd3 bw was good and you get +opk' sit doesn't mean you are ovulating. It means your body is gearing up to ovulate. Hopefully you're temping to confirm O. There could be other issues, or he could have issues, or there could be no found issues and end up with a dx of unexplained IF. But no dr is going to test you before testing DH. I think DH found the RE uncomfortable because it was an extensive discussion over everything and a vag u/s. He went willingly but I know he wishes we didn't have to. He couldn't go back with me this time around.
Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

  • I'm sorry it has come to this. I hope you get some answers.

My DH was reluctant to do a SA with the RE, but knowing that it was covered and that they wouldn't do anything on me until they had the SA done really helped move him forward. It's a really tough thing for guys to face. I hope your DH comes to terms in his own way. ((hugs))
