Re: Let's do this again... Tell your TTC story

  • I started TTC in 2010 and quickly realized that I wasn't ovulating. I'd been on the pill forever (like 12 years) and knew it'd take some time for my body to regulate.

Three months after my last pill, I'd gained 17 lbs, grown some rockstar mustache hair, developed acne and still hadn't a period. My BFF is a nurse and told me to google PCOS. I did and the description was spot on.

I called my OB and had testing done but everything actually came back normal. They told me to give it some more time.

A few months later, they put me on Clomid. I still wasn't ovulating, so Clomid was hopefully going to fix that. We did four Clomid cycles and I still wasn't ovulating.

Then I was referred to the RE. He switched up the meds and I did Femara plus a trigger shot. I ovulated!! No BFP, but ovulating felt like a success. We tried the same three more times... BFN each time.

In April 2012, we did Femara and the trigger but also an IUI. I got pregnant. Baby Vino was born too early, but he was a pretty perfect baby.

We then took a break since my body had gone through pregnancy and labor/delivery.

We started again a few months later and did four IUIs. Nothing, again.

This past spring, we moved to IVF. I did get pregnant but miscarried at 6.5 weeks.

Our frozen embryo transfer (using embryos that we created last spring) was in September and it didn't work.

We will give it one more shot in a few months.

I came off BC in July 2012 and we began NNT immediately, then moved to officially TTC in November 2012. We got our BFP in January 2013. Adalyn was born October 3, 2013.

I expected it to take at least a year to get pregnant, and I was mentally prepared for that, because my mom had a lot of trouble getting pregnant with all three of us (me and my two sisters). Endometriosis runs in our family, most of the women on my mom's side have it, including me. So now I'm left wondering if I just got lucky and will have a hard time when I start TTC#2, or if the endometriosis really isn't that bad and I'll be fine. I guess only time will tell.

I came off BC in Feb 2012. We had fun with TTC for the first few months (pretty much EOD because it was so exciting to be TTC!). By June of 2012 I started temping, fearing that something was wrong. Both my sister and mother got pregnant so easily. In January of 2013 we saw a RE who diagnosed us in Feb as unexplained IF. Ouch. I wish we had a label to attack, but here we are. We did one IUI with Clomid that failed, and all other Clomid cycles were TI because DH had trouble producing samples. We were not given a cryo option. I advocated to DH for a new clinic, and we met new RE in October. I love her! DH's stuff is on cryo right now while I am stimming for our first fresh IVF cycle.

I've been holding out on GP: I got drunk once and started a blog: Here it is (11/7 update)

  • I came off BC in September '12, while we were not trying, not preventing. (Pulling out) I tried to start temping immediately, but I have long cycles so it drove me crazy.
We decided to start trying in December '12 and have been trying since. I am hypothyroid and my levels finally got within range in September '13, so we will be waiting a while longer to start any other testing.
I've been more consistent with temping the last few months/cycles and it helps to make me feel like I'm actually doing something. I like knowing what my body is doing and when AF is coming.
  • We started trying dec 2012 and are just about to start our 13th cycle. I immediately started temping and found I do ovulate. My cycles and O day vary a little each cycle so I have to temp and use opk's to target it. I've had hormone testing done which came back fine. I do think I have a little cyst on my right ovary because I once in a while get very uncomfortable pains after ovulation. We haven't done other testing yet because I am waiting on DH to agree to an SA. For now we will try an at home SA test and see how it goes.

We started pursuing IF testing in September 2013. I got a surprise BFP during cycle 10 on October 17. I am positive that we conceived on the same day that DH had to give his s/a sample.

  • Off BCP September 2011 to try and give my body some time before we officially started trying. Unfortunately, I never got my period. May 2012 was our first official month without preventing, although I knew that clearly if I wasn't cycling on my own without provera it was a waste of time. Mr wanted to try on our own for 3 months- things we do for our loves :)

Fast forward to August 2012. Started the first round of Clomid at 50mg and Merformin. No response. September 100mg- no response. October 150mg- no response.

Mr and I have run the gamut of testing and all is clear, minus that pesky PCOS diagnosis.

Did one last cycle of Clomid with the first RE in January- 150 with a trigger. I ovulated- yay! But my uterine lining was so thin nothing would have stuck.

Switched REs (the main office was out of town) and did 3 femara/follistim iuis. 2 chemicals and 2 rounds of mild ohss later and we are on a small break until January for 2 more tries with this protocol until we seriously look into ivf. Found another RE that seems to get pcos a bit more and am hopeful. Adding a daily baby aspirin to help with the lining.

  • I went off of BC in July 2012, and we NNT until September of 2012. I have had some irregular cycles, but they happened once every two or three months. At first we just had fun with TTC, but in December I started using OPKs to see when I was ovulating. Some months I did, and others it was either a weak ovulation or I didn't at all. We started testing in November of this year and I was diagnosed with ovulation issues. We haven't finished testing yet, but once we do, I will be starting Clomid, hopefully early next year.

  • I stopped taking BC in Sept 2012 and NNT. We started TTC in Nov 2012. I started temping in May2013. My cycles are very regular, just no results yet. DH wanted to wait until March 2014 to seek testing while I wanted to do it at the year mark. We compromised and will seek help in January. If this cycle is a bust, I'm making the call next week.

  • I started having really long irregular cycles in my early to mid twenties but wasn't TTC so I didn't think much of it. DH and I got married in June of 2012 and started TTC right away and that is when I started to get worried about my irregular cycles.

I went to my OB/GYN in October just to chat and for my annual and she suggested initial b/w and an u/s because my symptoms (excessive facial hair - YAY, irregular cycles, inability to lose weight easily) pointed to PCOS. B/W and U/S confirmed it.

Bruins recommended an awesome RE to me and I went to see her in February 2013. We did allllllll the testing as well as an HSG and Tom got his s/a which was normal.

We've done Clomid cycles and TI but my doctor needs me to lose weight before IVF and I want to lose weight before we even try IUI. So here we are.

  • H and I were married in May of 2012, at 31 (H) and 33.  First we were just having fun, more NNT than TTC.  Lots of ST, etc.  I already knew I had seemingly typical cycles, and I quickly decided I wanted to learn more about how this whole thing works, so after a month or two, I started temping/charting.  I found that the months I was consistently temping, I could confirm O, and so we continued on TTC for the next year, plus some.

I was ready to head to the RE around the 1 year mark, but H still wasn't convinced we needed to.  I explained to him what I had learned (most couples within a year, etc.) and then I let it marinate in his head. I'd bring it up every now and then, but tried very hard not to push it. Within a few months, he was offering to go get a S/A done to see if he was 'the problem.'  I'm fairly certain that if I had pushed at all, I'd still be waiting.

Instead, we headed to the RE just one week before my 35th birthday. In the month since then, he's done his S/A, I've had an HSG, Saline Sono, and lots of bloodwork, and found that I will need a hysteroscopy to remove (what they are still unsure is) a polyp, and they will also do a laparoscopy at the same time.

We're looking at January, due to scheduling difficulties.

Once that is all done, word on the street is we'll try an IUI.

    Fun times ahead!! :)

  • I removed my last Nuvaring at the end of June 2012. My first 2 cycles off the BC were almost "perfect" at just about a month long. My third cycle went crazy at 44 days long. Since then, I've mostly had cycles ranging from 35-42-ish days (FF gives me an "average" cycle length of 37 days).

For the first 6 months off BC, I didn't temp or use OPKs, just kept track of my periods and had ST frequently. I started using OPKs in January 2013, and started temping the following month (without the OPKs, because they weirded DH out too much). Once I started temping, I saw that I do O on my own every cycle, though it can vary significantly as to when.

At the end of June 2013, I had an HSG done. It was all clear. DH got his S/A done in September. According to the lab's comments on his results, his count was through the roof, but his morph and motil were low and we should seek an RE. According to WHO criteria, his motil might be a little bit low, but everything else is stellar. We haven't sought further clarification (yet).

My cycle that started in October 2013 was the most "normal" cycle I'd had in a year, with O happening on CD 16. I was in shock when I tested 14 days later and got a BFP. I miscarried a couple of weeks ago at 6w2d.

The progesterone they measured on the day I started miscarrying (when I did miscarry?) was extremely low at only 1.7. I'll be seeking clarification and further answers on how we should proceed from here. I was starting to research REs when I got my BFP, so I guess I'll find one to set up a consultation with and see if we can get better answers.

  • **this is PR, so feel free to skip it if you would like**

My history is all in my siggy, but I'll repeat it anyway. I was diagnosed with PCOS back in 2005 (after not having a period for 10 months). I was put on the pill and stayed on until November 2011 when we decided to TTC. I saw my OB-GYN almost immediately to get the ball rolling, since I had a history of being anovulatory. She made me wait two 60-90 day cycles (which were both ended with provera) before further testing. We did some preliminary testing and tried one round of clomid with her... But I had no response.

In June 2012, we went to see an RE. She ran some more tests and had us try another clomid and then a femara cycle. I didn't respond to either. At that point, we decided to move on to injectables and IUI. Our first round was a mess. I'm what you would consider a "poor responder". So that cycle was essentially a bust. From there, we decided to optimize our chances (and the bit of insurance IF med coverage we had left) and go right for IVF. I was a very slow responder and ended up with only one developed follicle. They cancelled my ivf, and down-graded us to IUI. That was a BFN.

We decided to give ivf one more shot with a new protocol... I also integrated acupuncture. That protocol worked like a charm. I had 2 day 3 embryos transferred and 4 frozen. We got our BFP on 5/10/13, and I'm due in less than 6 weeks. I feel extremely fortunate that it worked on our "first" round of ivf (well, the first where we actually made it to retrieval anyway).

    ...hello out there!

I met DH and started dating during the summer of 1999.  We were married January 2009, and I went off BC and started TTC July 2010.  I had two very long cycles (60+ days) before I requested some answers from my doctor in January 2010 (and started charting).  I went through all the testing and my doctor didn't give me any answers.

In May 2011 I went to see a naturopath who took one look at my results, my cycles and me and told me I definetly had all the characteristics of PCOS.  We started a vitamin regime and acupuncture, and were just about to start homeopathics to regulate my cycle when I got my BFP in June 2011.  I had ovulated naturally on CD89.  DS was born February 2012.

AF returned November 2012 at 9 months PP with me still nursing 4-5x day.  My cycles were much more normal at 30-40days long.  I didn't chart, only tracked since we were still TTA until he was 1.5yr.

We decided to NNT in July 2013 in case it took us another year or more to concieve.  We were shocked and thrilled to discover I was pregnant at the end of July and due April 4, 2014.

At our 12 week u/s we discovered a missed miscarriage.

At 13.5 weeks, on Sept 25, I had a D&C to end the pregnancy because it was not happening naturally.

Three weeks later I was told that the pregnancy was a partial molar pregnancy, which is a non-viable pregnancy and the placenta is essenitally a tumour.  I now had to be monitored weekly to make sure my beta hCg returned to zero naturally otherwise I would be put on chemo to ensure all of the tumour was gone/killed off.  The risk being it can spread and result in cancer. I was told I would need to TTA for up to a year depending on the results of my betas.

    I got a natural negative beta Nov 28, 2013! Two months post-d&c.

Dec 9 I saw my specialist.  She was thrilled with my numbers and has indicated she would like to see three negative betas and then we can TTC again.  I have one scheduled for later this month, one for mid-late January and then we are NNT on our vacation in Mexico for our anni in January.

No matter what we will require very close follow-up if/when I do get pregnant again, as well as after I deliver because there is always a risk of the GTD (disease caused by the molar) returning or of having another partial molar or molar.

  • **This is also PR - I don't post often, and wasn't here long, but I lurk every day and keep following you ladies**

I went off BC in March 2012 because I had switched pills and was having irregular cycles on the pill (like not getting my period at all on a pill that was designed to have a period).  We were TTA from March 2012 until June 2013, primarily because I was untenured in my district and didn't want to be THAT teacher.  Once off the pill, I had clock-work cycles - 28 days on average, sometimes a 27 or 29, but clockwork.  I started temping December 2012, and noticed that once I started temping, my cycles were gradually getting shorter because my LP was decreasing.  I had started with an 11 day LP and by May it was down to 7.  I started Vitex in May/June to help increase my LP, knowing that we were planning to start TTC over the summer and that there was no way I was going to get pregnant with a 7 day LP.  In May 2013, I was notified that I was received tenure, but that I was also being excessed.  After applying for a few jobs and realizing that there was nothing out there that I wanted badly enough to not TTC, we started TTC in late June 2013.  I temped and used OPKs that first cycle, and we were lucky to become pregnant.  I found out on our third wedding anniversary, and am due on March 31st.

  • I'd first like to say that I love this thread and will be checking it all day. I'm enjoying reading everyone's stories. Even though I've been here for a bit, I don't know them all.

June 2012, DH and I just got approved for mortgage and we're looking at houses. We knew we would start TTC in a year and I had my annual appointment. At that appointment I asked my NP about getting ready to try. She asked a few questions and honestly, if she didn't like my answer she pushed me for more (thankfully). She did some test and discovered I had PCOS. She put me on 1000 mg of metformin and told me to spend the year trying to loose weight.

A year later at my next appointment I had lost 40 pounds, got off BCP, and started TTC. Didn't use anything other than timing. Got BFP in Sept. Oct 11th went in for my first u/s and the baby was measuring small, but had a heart beat. Went in again two weeks later and there was no more heartbeat and they could see blood. Oct 29th I had a miscarriage, assisted by medication from my NP. I had to take the medication again on Nov 1st because my levels didn't go down like they should.

I've had my blood taken every week since and have watched my levels very slowly go down. DH and I agreed to wait for AF before actively trying again. I hate this wait. I go a week from today for another blood test.

  • This is a wonderful thread IRV!  Thank you so much for starting it.

July 2012 I had missed a BC pill while we were on vacation, and we had gotten pregnant a month before our wedding.  About a week later I started bleeding heavily, and we had found out that we miscarried 3 weeks before our wedding.

October 2012 We decided for me to get off BC because I had been on it for 9 years, and it was really messing with my body and my mind.  We were planning to begin NFP to prevent until we were ready to TTC a year or 2 later.

January 2013 I had only had 1 normal cycle since getting off BC, and saw my Dr about it.  She recommended TCOYF and moving to an OB that specializes in fertility (we don't have RE's in our area).   This was when we started NNT.

April 2013 We started full on TTC because I was having cycles that needed ended with Provera and I wasn't ovulating.  This was when we started with the IF OB, and I was diagnosed with PCOS.

Summer of 2013 I started trying the PCOS diet, and ovulated on my own after 72 days. Our timing was perfect, but resulted in a BFN.
Sept 2013 we did a round with 50mg of Clomid.  That resulted in a BFP, and we lost the baby in November.
Right now we are TTA and taking charge of our finances so that we can move forward with more treatments (100% OOP), and to take some time to cope with the 2 losses.  Our first loss was so close to our wedding that we never dealt with it.  Just moved on and focused on the wedding.

  • Our TTC story is shorter than most of the wonderful women on this board, but I’m long winded. Bear with me!

DH and I married October 2012. At that point we had already been together for 8 years. We were closing on our house and decided we didn’t want to start TTC before closing and we’d discuss after. We closed 12/5/12 and talked about TTC just after Christmas. We both decided we were ready but wanted to talk to my obgyn before starting just to see if there was anything we should do. My annual exam was in January 2013 and we started TTC after speaking with my doctor.

1st cycle I spotted more days than I didn’t. I had no confirmed ovulation and got my period naturally on CD 40-something.

2nd cycle I didn’t really spot, but CD60 came and I called my obgyn. I started provera and got AF.

3rd cycle same as 2nd., provera around CD60.

4th cycle my obgyn decided to try 50mg Clomid after some more bloodwork and HSG. I went to get my HSG and was unable to because my cervix was tilted/too small. At this point my obgyn said it was best I move on to an RE because there wasn’t anything else he could really do to help.  Got an HSG all clear with the RE after having my cervix dilated. Cycle was still a bust, annovulatory yet again. Provera, again.

5th cycle, 9th month. RE upped Clomid to 100mg, annovulatory, Provera.

6th cycle, 10th month. RE upped Clomid one last time to 150mg, annovulatory, Provera.

7th cycle, 11th month. Where we are now. We’re trying femara to see if it will make me O. If it doesn’t we’ll move on to injects + IUI. If I O and still get a BFN we’ll stick to the femara for 1-3 more cycles before moving on.

So DH was 32 and I was 29 when we got married after being together for two years. My last shot of depo was supposed to wear off July 4th 2012. I could already tell about a month before that trying depo for two rounds was a mistake because I had breakthrough bleeding All. The. Time. Like for weeks (I'd previously had the implanon implant but it expired 6 months before the wedding). So I went to the doctor, and was reminded it's normal for it to take several months for it all to get out of my system. I didn't ovulate till October/November 2012. We charted, tempted, opked, peed on everything in sight and finally decided to go back to the obgyn in August 2013. (Ps my cycles are only like 25 days so there were lots if full cycles in there). She told me to lose some weight and "destress". Since having a baby was our number 1 priority DH had me quit my job and start exercising more regularly. I just had a Gut feeling something was wrong and wanted to see an RE. DH was very supportive. We went through all the testing and I'm totally "normal" but we found out the DH has .5% morph. The doctor essentially said our chances of conceiving naturally were less then 1% each month so we decided to move forward with IUI. Fortunately we never made it that far because I got my BFP that month and never started the protocol. We're due in July 2014.

  • @brij2006 and @luckyangel07 - I'm trying not to be hopeful yet. Today's temp gave the CH's and a slept like crap and had a bunch of wine last night at my grandma's 90th birthday dinner. I hope FF is right, I just don't want to get my hopes up. Also, our timing was crap if it is because I had NO change in CM or other signs so I wasn't taking OPK's.

@islandmonkey8 Even if your timing wasn't the greatest, at least you would know that your body responds to the Femara, and you can be better aware of that next time around.

ETA: If there even needs to be a next time. ;-)

I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your stories. Hearing what you have gone thru, how difficult this has been for some. You women are so amazingly strong and are able to stay so positive! You just amaze me. Keep it up ladies, you inspire us. XOXO I have just started TTC, have been married just over a year and are still in the beginnings of things. I just started checking my CM the last month or so and have gone to see my drs to make sure things are set to go. We will see...
