Re: 10 Books that have Stuck With You

  • Here's mine...

    1. Anne of Green Gables - LM Montgomery (My dad read this to me when I was 10 and I've come back to it so often since then.)

    2. Little Women - Louisa May Alcott ("I like good strong words that mean something." - Me, too, Jo!)

    3. Romeo and Juliet - William Shakespeare

    4. The Bible

    5. Harry Potter series

    6. Flowers in the Attic - VC Andrews (I read this when I was probably too young for the content and it just branded in my memory.)

    7. The Giving Tree - Shel Silverstein (I still tear up every time I read it to my daughter.  What is it about this book?)

    8. Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen

    9. To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee (I read this as a teen, but it still reminds me, as a prosecuting attorney, to seek justice and not a "win".)

    10. Don Quixote - Miguel de Cervantes

    1. HP Series
    2. To Kill a Mockingbird
    3. Little Women
    4. Matilda
    5. Number the Stars
    6. A Thin Dark Line (my first "grown up" book that I was NOT old enough to be reading at the time)
    7. Where the Red Fern Grows (the ending! wtf.)
    8. Pride and Prejudice
    9. Three Cheers for Tacky (my dad used to read it to me and my sisters with voices and such)
    10. Jane Eyre

This was hard. I read a lot of just regular fiction so mostly I'm entertained without much really sticking with me. Guess I know what one of my goals for next year will be!

  • 1. The Bible

    2. Little Women

    3. To Kill A Mockingbird

    4. Message from Nam by Danielle Steele (not sure why, but I always remember this book)

    5. On These I Stand by Countee Cullen (specifically his poem The Love Tree)

    6. Charlotte's Web

    7. The Chronicles of Narnia

    8. The Teddy Bear Tree (I think that is what it was called. I adored it when I was little)

    9. A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks

    10. All of my Calvin & Hobbes books. :)

  • 1.  Goodnight Moon.  I didn't really understand it until I'd read it aloud to my oldest.  Our copy is so careworn, but I wouldn't ever trade it in.
    2. Secret Garden / The Little Princess.  I can't even tell you how many times I read these.
    3. The Thornbirds.  I wasn't really old enough to get everything in this book, but somehow I was allowed to watch the TV movie and fell in love with the love story.
    4. A Light in the Attic.  I can probably still recite some of these poems.  Sick Day was my favorite.
    5. Baby Sitter's Club.  These were my idols through grade school.
    6. Lord of the Flies.
    7. The Handmaid's Tale.  These two really make you think about society as a whole, and then you have all the feels.
    8. Salem's Lot.  Although The Stand is officially my favorite SK, SL was my first.  And you know what they say.  You never forget your first.
    9. LOTR.  I didn't read these (other than the Hobbit) until there was hype around them.  I always considered the fantasy genre to be the domain of nerdy guys wearing capes who play D&D and Magic the Gathering.  Opened a new section of the bookstore for me.
    10. Twilight.  I really hate to say this.  I picked up Twilight to see what the big deal was.  I wouldn't have given it a second glance because I considered it a kid's book.  While it isn't a stellar example of YA lit, it was my first YA read as an adult, and as a result the majority of books I read fall into the YA age-group.  Maybe I would have circled back around when there was hype around another book, but I would have missed out on a lot of wonderful reads.

    4. A Light in the Attic.  I can probably still recite some of these poems.  Sick Day was my favorite.

I cannot go to school today, said Little Peggy Ann McKay. I have the measles and the mumps, a gash, a rash and purple bumps!

    I did this, too!
  • I just did this on Facebook so I'll c&p:

    1. I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak - my all time favorite. The self-deprecating humor of Ed Kennedy, the way Zusak's words twist their way into my heart: this is everything a book should be for me.
    2. In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez - the courage of the Mirabal sister's in the face of great danger always inspires me
    3. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer- ELaIC has a near perfect blend of humor and pathos, plus in the opening section Oskar reminded me so much of my nephew that it immediately endeared him to me
    4. Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
    5. Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman -If Laini Taylor and Neil Gaiman don't light your imagination on fire, you might just be dead
    6. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins -I tear up every time I get to the part where Katniss says: "I volunteer as tribute!"
    7. The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss - Any writer that can make me read an 800+ page book more than once has a devoted fan in me.
    8. The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater - the complex relationships and the sheer force of imagination behind the books in this series keep me coming back for more. This is my go to audiobook. Whenever I'm in between things I go back and lose myself in Henrietta again.
    9. The Kite Runner by Khaled Housseini- heartbreaking, hopeful, and wonderfully written
    10. Beauty Queens by Libba Bray - Libba Bray does all of the things I need for a perfect book- makes me laugh, makes me think and makes me feel. I'll read anything she writes.

  • 1. Like Water for Chocolate

    2. Harry Potter

    3. Matilda

    4. Tell the Wolves I'm Home

    5. Romeo & Juliet

    6. The Book Thief

    7. Gone Girl

    8. Wonder

    9. Water for Elephants

    10. Lord of the Flies
  • Ha...I just did this on FB! Here's my C&P

    1. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Read it for the first time in 10th grade and it still remains my favorite book of all time.

    2. Looking for Alaska by John Green. This is the first JG book I ever read, and thus began a lifelong love affair/him becoming a favorite author. If you see a book with his name on it, you should just effing read it. The Fault in Our Stars is his best.

    3. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. This book would probably not be considered life changing, except it changed mine. It made me want to be a writer that writes books that make people feel like this book made me feel. It's the literary equivalent of a hug from your bestie.

    4. Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling. Because...seriously. Ravenclaw for life.

    5. The Color Purple by Alice Walker. I feel like this book and it's film adaptation are a part of my DNA at this point. I don't remember a time when it wasn't a part of my life.

    6. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I read the last 150 pages of this book in the fetal position with tears streaming down my face so yes...definitely affected.

    7. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Oh Mr. Darcy. My very first book boyfriend. ‪#‎swoon‬

    8. The Lover's Dictionary by David Levithan. I will read anything by David Levithan because he is just the kind of writer who crafts words in a way that make you rethink the entirety of your life. This book is my favorite because it is seriously EVERYTHING and David has kept it going via a Twitter account where he continues to post the definitions and just kill me dead on a daily basis.

    9. Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner. I was reminded of how much I loved this book recently while I was reorganizing my bookshelves. I read this book shortly after I became a mom and was going through new mom fog, body issues, marital issues, and just life shizz in general. The content of this book just hit me right where I lived and I cried my face off through most of it.

    10. The Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins. Katniss Everdeen is my antidrug.

  • 1.  The Stand by Stephen King - to this day every time I hear someone cough I am convinced it is Captain Tripps

    2.  Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown - this is the only book I own that I have ever written, highlighted and dog-eared.  It couldn't be helped.  There was just so much that struck me in this book

    3.  Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman - My first ever Neil Gaiman and my life has not been the same since.

    4.  The Road by Cormac McCarthy - I never want to survive the apocalypse.  NO WAY.

    5.  Mila 18 by Leon Uris - My mom told me I had to read this back when I was a teenager.  I went into it thinking it would be a stinker based on the title alone, but this book broke my heart in a million different ways and I loved everything about it.

    6.  The Things They Carried by Tim O'brien - Gorgeous writing.

    7.  102 Minutes: The Untold Story of the FIght to Survive Inside the Twin Towers by Jim Dwyer - No explanation needed on this one.

    8.  Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein - Genius

    9.  Charlotte's Web by E.B.White - and I don't even like Spiders!

    10.  Hot Winds from Bombay (I don't even remember the author) - but just for the name and the cover of the book alone.

  • As Wilf and I walked our 2 miles this morning I contemplated the top 10 books I've read that have really stayed with me. They are (in no particular order)
    1) The Baby Sitters Club, particularly the little sister series: When I was younger I felt like the first kid to have glasses and matured early (I've been 5'6" since I was 12). These books were really helpful to me and started a lifelong love of reading.
    2) The Grapes of Wrath: This may be the first example of truly amazing writing that I ever read. I read it in high school and we had to do a presentation on the book we choose. I made my dad help me make this crazy huge chicken wire sculpture thing. Not something I'll ever forget.
    3) Brave New World: This book taught me to fear big brother and fight the man.
    4) Where the Red Fern Grows: Because heartbreak is a part of life.
    5) Still Alice: Patients, no matter their condition now, were once normal (for the most part) and they were probably once afraid that what is happening to them right now was going to happen to them.
    6) The Outlander Series: This series taught me that it's ok to like historical romance sic fi fiction. I cannot tell you how many times I skipped reading this because it was about a time traveling nurse and I thought that type of book was silly. Without falling in love with this series, I never would have read The Wise Man's Fear or The Game of Throne series.
    7) The Art of Racing in the Rain: Truly wonderful dogs do exist. Wilfie was almost named Enzo.
Any memoir by Jen Lancaster: Bitter is the New Black taught me that it's ok to make fun of yourself and that there is a market for snark out there. It inspired me to write a few short stories about nursing which I would love to one day expound upon.
    9) Watership Down: Because sometimes the story you make up for your family really is amazing and worthy of publication.
    10) The Poisonwood Bible: Perhaps the first book I ever read where I openly cried while reading it. Sometimes you need a good cry (this also applies to The Sky is Everywhere, The Fault in Our Stars, and Me Before You).

  • In no particular order

    • The Little House, Virginia Lee Burton
    • Sons and Lovers, D.H. Lawrence
    • The Rainbow, D.H. Lawrence
    • Joshua [and the rest of the Joshua series], Joseph F. Girzone
    • Little Women, Louisa May Alcott
    • Symposium, Plato
    • A Wrinkle in Time, Madeleine L'Engle

I'm going to end my list at 7 instead of 10, because I can't pick which 3 to include out of the next 30 or so that I could consider.

  •
    4. A Light in the Attic.  I can probably still recite some of these poems.  Sick Day was my favorite.

What's that? What's that you say? You say today is Saturday? Goodbye I'm going out to play!
