Outlander re-read (series SP)

I'm about 40% through. Where is everyone else?

I think I'm loving re-reading this even more than when I first read it. I'm catching little details I never noticed in my first read, and having read a lot more books about the time period since then, it's fun to go back to it without being so clueless about the history.

As I've been reading, It's SO. WEIRD. for Jamie and Claire not to know each other intimately. For most of the series, they know each other so well that it's just a given. And... I think I like older Jamie better than young Jamie. He is adorable and sexy and cute right now, but I know full well that later he becomes HOT SEX, and I want THAT Jamie.

Re: Outlander re-read (series SP)

  • I like Older Jamie as well. I just started last night so I'm at the point where Claire meets him for the first time.

That part was crazy for me.

I was like "Claire!! Get your shit together, woman! This is the man of your dreams!"

  • I'm only about at about 10%.  I just got to the point where she fixes his dislocated shoulder.  Oh gosh, I love that man.  Yes, older Jamie is hotter but young Jamie holds a special place in my heart.  His sweet demeanor and eagerness to be a good husband are so endearing.  There's a part of this Jamie that's still innocent.

I've caught so many things in her interactions with Frank that I've never noticed before.

I think that's why I love older Jamie. He's experienced and worldly and I don't know if I find innocence sexy - heh. I love comparing how much he has changed from book 1 to book 3.

Don't get me wrong, I ADORE young Jamie.

Right?  They seemed so irritated with each other, like they were going through the motions and were playing parts in a play rather than being themselves.  I didn't realize how Claire acts like she's only partially herself around Frank until knowing how she acts the rest of the time.

I'm not sure if I agree with that.  I think most of that was because they were still getting to know each other.  They'd been married for years but spent barely any time together in all those years.

True.  You know how much I love bad boys.  However, this Jamie just seems "untainted".  I want to be like, "Enjoy your simple life now because shit's about to get real."

hahahaha. Well, to be fair, he's already had it hard. He was flogged (twice) and almost killed, he thinks his sister had Jack Randall's bastard child, he feels banished from his home, he's an outlaw with a price on his head. He's not exactly innocent. And he handles it all with grace - but I think age and experience gives him this added roughness and confidence that is just so hot.

LOL!  You're right, but the whole ordeal Randall is what sticks with him and gives him an edge he didn't have before.  I'm not trying to say Older Jamie is not hotter (he totally is...that freaking confidence), but I'm just making a case for Young Jamie.

She is, but I think that stems from getting to know each other.  We're all on our best behavior at the beginning of a relationship.  I don't think it was that she was faking it or playing a part.  With Jamie, she could be herself in the beginning because she didn't care what he thought and she definitely didn't expect to marry him or fall in love with him.

I didn't know everyone was doing a reread so I'm excited that I decided to do one too.

One thing that struck me with the Claire and Frank scenes is what he says to her about cheating/kids.  He says he would always forgive her if she slept with someone else but that he could never raise a child that was not his own.  Which is basically the exact opposite of what he does later on.

This happens in the 3rd book???  (they all blend together for me so many years later) And this was written in the first couple chapters of book 1.  Makes me love DG so much more because I wonder how much of the series she had planned out from the start.

I noticed this too! I texted JenE about this last night. I've been noticing little things here and there that become important later on. It's crazy. I thought I read somewhere that she was a pantser!

I don't know why but the crazy detail that stuck out to me was Frank telling her that her eyes look like sherry.  Later on, Jamie ends up saying that same thing, which is kind of freaky.

She's said herself that she's a pantser, but she also said that for at least the first 3 books, she knew the story arc. Originally it was intended to be a trilogy and she knew when she started Outlander where Voyager would end up.

  • I think Frank truly believed that when he said it, before Brianna. However, I also think he used that as justification for his own cheating on her.

I wonder if he'd been cheating on Claire during the war.  He acted sort of hinky about it when the subject came up because of the ghost.  As they've both said, six years is a long time.

I've heard my question from this morning regarding the alcove is kind of addressed in The Exile, but not necessarily in that particular scene.

Maybe I should get it anyway to add to my hardcover collection.
