What would you grab?

I belong to a photography message board on which a challenge posted this week is to take a picture of what you would grab if you had to evacuate quickly from your home (fire, natural disaster, etc.).  Assume that humans and pets are already safely out of the house and you have 10 minutes to gather what you can carry out.

What would you grab?

  • assuming my pets are somewhere safe... my purse, definitely. Then it'd be a mad dash to gather my electronic stuff. lol
  • Agreed with most PP.

    1. Purse
    2. Fire proof safe (although like most said, it's fireproof).
    3. Hard drive / CDs of pictures
    4. Electronics (though I'm sure my DH would have his PS4 with him before realizing whether or not I was safe)
    5. Whatever clothing I could grab in the remaining time (don't want to freeze my booty off).
  • Beware that most fireproof safes aren't really fireproof. They are better described as smoke proof. You are best keeping that stuff off site or at least a copy off site.

If I knew I had 10min. I would grab my purse (which has my wallet and my kindle if I am not using it)

    My heirloom jewelry

And probably our computer and hardrive.

Some clothes. Nothing in particular but if I knew I had to leave I want clothes

Honestly I hate these questions most often it's about a fire and I hate the perception you have time. Get. Out. Of. The. House. That is all you have time for. Trying to get their dogs out of the house is what killed my aunt and uncle.

  • Honestly, if H and the furbabies were okay, I don't care about anything else.

If I had a moment, I would grab a bra. I'm not one of those people who can be without one and still walk comfortably. :)

I'm really sorry to hear about your family. I think what you said is so vital to remember. Stuff just isn't important.

  • I would grab my computer, my photos, and as many of my records as I could carry out.
  • I would really only be worried about DH and the furbabies. And my sister if she were still living here. Losing everything else would be really sad but our lives are more important.

  • Thank you. It happened almost 15 years ago, but they are always missed. I am just very passionate about the truth about fires and not tampering with smoke detectors (their kitchen one was super high and always went off so they took out the battery)

I feel like it is commonly perceived that you have time (on tv and elsewhere) to grab things but generally you don't.

  • Ok answering this question seriously now:

My raggedy Anne doll made by my grandma and the baby blanket also made by her, my Godmother's necklace, and the first engagement ring that Alan got for me.
  • I lived my very own version of this. I was living in St Louis, and they were extending a road behind our apartment. We got 3 days of rain, and someone must not have done their job, because there was a knock on our door at 4 am. We were evacuated because the building was sliding down the hill.

My ex-boyfriend and I grabbed the dog, dog food, and were out the door. He snuck back in for our car keys, and shoes before they put the caution tape up, and wouldn't let anyone back in.

After they were able to stabilize the building, each apt was given 5 minutes to go in and grab anything they could.

It was nuts. A week later, they gave each apt 2 hours to pack up everything and move out. I think I still have nightmares!

  • I would grab our wedding and honeymoon scrapbooks, my laptop, and my childhood teddy bear.

In reality, as long as DH and I were both safe, that would be enough.

  • This is actually a huge fear of mine so H and I really do have a plan.

I would get Baby's ashes and H would get the dog. If there was still time, we'd grab wedding rings.

  • This brings up nightmares for me too. After Hurricane Irene, my apartment complex started to flood, but it didn't look like it was going to get too bad.  My BF at the time and I moved our cars to higher ground and went to bed that night.  At 4am there was pounding on the door followed by, "You're being evacuated.  You have five minutes to pack a bag and be outside your door." While it wasn't life threatening (like a fire), it was pretty damn scary.  I grabbed my purse, laptop, a few clothes, and the teddy bear I've had since I was a baby. They literally pulled a boat up to my front door and took us to safety.  There was about six feet of water all around the complex.  Luckily, we were on the second floor and a few days later we were able to get back in and find the only things we lost were the few things we kept in the garage and our cars (even moving them didn't prevent water from getting in up to the dashboard).

If it happened again, assuming DH, my step son, and the fur babies were OK, I'd grab my purse, teddy bear, small safe with important papers, and the shadow box from our wedding.  If it were actually a fire, though, I'd probably just GTFO.

  • When Sandy rolled through the NE last year, DH and I were prepared with bug-out bags packed, cat carriers at the ready, and everything piled by the front door ready to move. I don't mess around with natural disasters if there's the slightest chance we need to leave (I wasn't worried about flooding, since we live on top of a hill, but the power going out for a long time was very possible, and I wanted to be ready to leave if the house was just uninhabitable because of it).

If there was a fire, I doubt I'd be thinking clearly enough to grab anything in my mad dash out of the house ASAP. Assuming furkids are already out of the house and safe, I'd probably grab my purse, cell phone, and lock-box. I'd be devastated at losing other things, but we have homeowner's insurance for a reason, and our other electronics, wedding photos, and clothing really are replaceable (assuming DH has grabbed the external hard drive with all our photos/etc).
