Legend, Prodigy and Champion by Marie Lu  (I've only read Legend so far, but it's a trilogy so I have to recommend the set).

I work in an elementary school library and will get a list of mg and children's book for you. I'm actually going through this process right now too. For a public school it's rare to have a book budget, but super excited to get the kids new books!

When you say children's book do you mean picture books? Or are you looking for chapter books?

For starters ( what's popular at my site):
    Wimpy kid series
    Dork diaries
    Judy moody
    Junie b. Jones
    Babymouse
    Lunch lady
Weird school & weird school daze
    Cam jensan series
    Ivy & bean
How to train your dragon series
    Dripping fang series
    Spiderwick
    Gregor the overlander
    Rainbow magic
    Magic tree house
    Capt underpants
    Moon over manifest
    A crooked kind of perfect
    The one and only ivan
    39 clues
Aminal spirit (new series first book by brandon mull, maggie s wrote bk 2)
    Boxcar children
    Babysitters club
    Goosebumps & rotten school
    Geromino stilton
    Zombie chasers series
    Charlie bone series
    Ranger's apprentice
Any or all rick riordan series
    Bad kitty series
Riley Bloom series (spin off Alyson Noel's Immortal series)
Any and all by Blume, Clements, Clearly

That was just off the top of my head.

eta: how could I forget Megan McCafferty's Jessica's It List. Spin off of her JD series but for mg.

What about The Giver by Lois Lowry?  I haven't read it so I don't know if it's appropriate.
I was about to suggest this very book. Actually there are a couple others in that series.

The Outsiders, Rumble Fish, and That was then, this is now, all by SE Hinton

IDK what your age ranges are, but what about the Wimpy Kid series, and the Dork Diaries? Little younger crowd, for those.

    Have fun shopping!!!
  • Oh yes and all three of the Kristin Cashore books!!! She remains one of my favorites of the past several years. Graceling, Fire, and Bitterblue.
