Same story, different POV

Re: Same story, different POV

  • I don't like this trend and I don't pick up the second book if it's the same story.  There are too many other books I'd rather read.  I don't need to read the same one from a different perspective.

I'm reading the Coincidence of Callie and Kayden right now and it has alternating perspectives.  Sometimes there's an overlap in the story when the perspective changes and I've been enjoying it.

I am so glad I'm not alone in disliking this trend!  I wanted to ask about this recently, but I was kind of scared that people would be all, "OF COURSE companion books are genius!" and then I would feel dumb.

I've read quite a few companion books if I liked the original enough to want to continue the series.  Mostly because I feel compelled to read books in order (I wouldn't feel right skipping to book 3, which has been a disappointment lately anyway).  I think I'm going to need to work on my compulsion to read them even though I'm not very interested.

The only time I would actually be interested in a companion book is if I REALLY loved a book.  Then I could relive the story over from a different POV.  But honestly, the books that usually come out with a companion are not that great.  I mean, the first book might be really good, but I just haven't found any that are so great they're worthy of re-reading from a different POV.

I'm sure it has to do with the publishers.  Just like pushing for things to be in trilogy form.  I don't like this trend either.  I feel like it's... like... diluting good literature or something.  I don't know how else to say it.

  • I find this similar to the movie industry splitting a bok into two movies. Way to ruin the story for the sake of more money

This bugs me too. Why does everything have to be a trilogy? Sometimes it works, but sometimes it just feels forced. (And now I can't think of any good examples! Lol. i'll have to go to goodreads to be able to back this up.)
