Not a huge YA fan...should I try Divergent?

So I'm not a huge fan of YA. I've tried, and it just doesn't do it for me like it does for others. My questions is simply whether or not I should even attempt Divergent. The reviews are so unbelievable, I feel almost silly for not giving it a chance. I just finished The Goldfinch (which took me a month to plow through), and found it slightly depressing up until the very, very end. Basically, I'm looking for something a bit lighter. So any thoughts? Can a non-YA lover get into Divergent??

  • I think this question is impossible to answer accurately. Lots of people liked Divergent, so you may like it too. It's not a swoony teeny romancey type of YA if that's a reason for your derision. It's dystopian and has quite a bit of action so I say try it and see. Maybe download an excerpt from Amazon and see if it entices you.

I'm thinking, yes, you probably could get in to it, but I'm thinking there are maybe better options for you, especially since I didn't think the rest of the trilogy lived up to Divergent.

  • There's no love triangle which can be typical of YA and it's not particularly young feeling, but everyone has different tastes.

What have you got to lose in trying it? If you don't like it, put it down. This is one where you'll know within a few chapters whether or not it's for you.

  • I depends on what type of YA lit you've tried. If you've hated Hunger Games for instance you'll probably not like Divergent. If it's more the teenage angst/ love stories you dislike you might like this one since it's not a huge focus in this book.
  • I don't recommend it. If you don't like YA in general I don't think you would enjoy it.

For light books are you into any romances? I usually can do a fluffy romance to follow a long chewy read. Something like Nora Roberts inn Boonsboro series, Sultry with a twist or maybe a little less sexy with The Apple Orchard by Susan Wiggs, Susannah Kearsley (longer and a little more intense than previous books)

  • It's a YA book, so if you don't tend to like YA, well, yeah, you probably won't like it.  Particularly if you're wanting something lighthearted.  Or if you're wanting something comparable to The Goldfinch.

  • Maybe you will. Maybe you won't.

If you're looking for people to tell you it's good, you'll find that here. But yeah, you're going to have to read it to decide for yourself.

  • I think I am going to try it. It was only $5 on Kindle last night so I figured what the heck, I can always put it down if I don't like it. Thanks for all the input!

I wouldn't recommend it for a non-YA lover. It's not as angst-y as some, but I think there are better options for light, quick reads.
