23% of Americans didn't read a single book last year.

Re: 23% of Americans didn't read a single book last year.

  • A co-worker once bragged that she had not read a book in 20 years.  When I was caught staring open-mouthed at that comment (holding a book, open to the page I was on), she said "why bother, everything will eventually be on tv."
    This reminds me of this:

Mh doesn't read. He is the low end of the curve and I am at the high end.

This is me and my husband, also. He reads other things for school (he's a teacher and is taking grad classes), but he's not the type to pick up a book and read for fun.
The article also gives stats for reading for fun, but this is just a book. Any book, for any reason.

My husband rarely rarely reads novels but reads a lot of books related to his field. That counts :)

I guess it is true that he does read for work as well. Legislation, acts, etc. He would never pick a book up for fun though.
  • I have loved reading since I was young because my parents and grandparents were always reading something. If they had been a part of the percentage that never reads then I doubt that I would have learned to love reading.

Being able to read and comprehend material quickly helped me achieve so much in school, especially in literature classes. In my experience, the kids who struggled the most were those who hated reading. I think I've even read studies that show how reading every day can greatly improve a child's chances of academic success.

I can see not being a reader, but to not read a single book. I just don't understand how that is possible. DH isn't a reader, but he reads books for work and the occasional book that pops up to peak his interests. Last year when I was in my first trimester I really couldn't read because it made me feel motion sickness, and since the baby came I have not had much more than 15mins at a time to read each day, but I still read 23 books.

ETA: I like how they put the exclamation point after the 13% read 50 or more! That is still less then a book a week, and I don't feel warrants an exclamation. I would have thought a book a week would be average and what my goal usually is.

ETA2: I am a reader because I always saw my mom w/ a book in her hand and loved the idea of reading before bed. I often wonder how it might be different because I am always reading on my iPad, and my daughter might not recognize the difference between me reading and being on Facebook. Her daddy is always son his tablet but isn't reading a book.
