T&P needed for my cat

edited January 2014 in Getting Pregnant
I just dropped my 4 yr old cat at the hospital. He hasn't eaten for 2 days, has a fever and a huge lump in his throat. It's about the size of a ping pong ball and I'm so worried about him. I'm hoping on everything that this is just something simple because DH and I cannot afford surgery right now.
I'm waiting for the doctor to call me this afternoon and give me an update. I'm almost hoping its a foreign object or abscess rather than anything else...

  • Lots of T&Ps! If nothing else, you did the right thing by getting kitty to the vet; cats can get extremely ill from not not eating for more than even just a single day. The results have severe effects on their livers.

The vet will take good care of your kitty and get some nutrients back into his system; I hope the lump in his throat is nothing too serious.

If it does require surgery, check out Care Credit. They can be a lifesaver paying for animal or human medical stuff, and there's no interest for the first 6 months - 1 year.

  • Update:
The vet said it is definitely a mass in the throat. She said to do the minimal tests she would need to do would cost $800 and that won't even give us an answer of what we are looking at. It will only tell us a mass or not, but we already can tell it is a mass. Anything we find is going to require surgery and that means we are looking at over $2000.
She agreed to give us an antibiotic to take home but it is not her #1 recommendation bc she doesn't think I can manage... trust me I will get an antiobiotic in this cat. If the antibiotic doesn't work, we are going to a different vet where I used to work (he is an hour away). Get a 2nd opinion and see where we go from there.

Also, watch kitty very closely to be sure he's eating. If he isn't, you might need to do what we did when our cat was sick and literally gagging at food we'd put down for her: watered down cat food or chicken baby food in a syringe squirted straight into the back of the throat. It's the only way we got anything into her for a couple of days.

This is my plan for feeding because he hasn't been eating for a while. DH mushed up some cat food last night and put it on his tongue. He got a little bit down but definitely not enough.

  • Poor sweetie :( I hope that the antibiotics work, or that the 2nd opinion will be either cheaper or a more definite diagnosis. I know vet bills can get crazy, but like Lucky said there are definitely options for getting on a payment plan and most vets are very willing to work with someone who clearly cares about their animal and will do whatever possible to make them well. I'm so sorry you have to see him like this, and I truly hope he is on the mend soon :(

Well we brought him home last night from the hospital and he was covered in pee. I am so furious about that I can't even begin to go on. I had to give the poor guy a sponge bath which he cried through the whole time. He isn't eating or drinking so we have been using a syringe to get water and broth into his mouth. He is okay with us doing that but he won't move at all. Last night he fell asleep on the couch with DH on an old pillow & wrapped in a towel and he couldn't get up to go to the litter box so he peed in his sleep. I found him this morning hiding in the basement.
I think he knows he is dying and his brother knows too. My other cat won't let him near him without hissing.
I have been crying all night and day. Tomorrow is most likely the end for him. The mass is much larger than I first realized.
When you have an older animal you have time to brace for the end as they slowly decline. This is a 4 yr old cat and it just popped up out of nowhere...
It's hard when something so terrible happens so suddenly...
Hoping for a miracle but I don't see how this could get better.

    Thanks for all your T&P's

  • :( This is so heartbreaking.

I went through this with my first cat in college. He had a mass discovered in his lungs and we treated it with steroids/chemo for 6 months. He did so well. But when it came back, it did so suddenly, and it was very clear that it was time to say goodbye. I realized he was relapsing and he deteriorated within a couple of days. He was only 3.

This is such a horrible, heartbreaking thing to have to go through, and I am so sorry you're facing it. ((hugs)) and T&Ps for all of you.
